Check your connectors if using water stop ends the the thing in the middle can become faulty and create a suspected blockage if so take O ring of this and  chuck the plastic thing all together and make into a standard connector problem solved

As silly as it sounds ensure you have connected it the correct way according to water flow, as said get rid of silly stop end connectors.

One other thing - is the centre shaft a thin straight (3/4") tube ?

Check the strainers on the head/riser tube assembly, there should be two, one at the top & one at the bottom. They will have very fine slits in them, these can block up with resin beads. Best way to clean them is with a stiff toothbrush then give them a blast with the hose pipe. Some riser tubes even have an extra mesh strainer inside the tube.
