van wouldnt start this morning so i smacked the starter motor with a hammer a few times and HEY PRESTO!it started first time so i defo know its the starter motor!

worked all day and van started up first time coming home.just filled up for tomorrow so ill try the hammer trick again if it wont start first thing!

Thats the solenoid on the starter thats gone then ......used to be able to change just the solenoid years ago .....not anymore on most vehicles.

On my mk4 escort rs turbo they mounted the starter motor below the down pipe on the turbo. Was a common problem with sticking starter motors.

Petrol stations were the worst. Get out and pop bonnet and smack a starter motor with a broom lol

Geee Robert. That goes back a few years.

I can remember on the old GM Chevrolets straight 6 and V8's (1957 through to 1966) that the solenoid sat on top of the starter motor. Inside the solenoid was a connector/contact plate that could be turned through 180 degrees. Solenoid was good to go for another 10 years once that was done.
