Have YOU smashed a glass with hot?
« on: November 11, 2014, 06:47:40 pm »
I was always worried about smashing glass with hot with some of horror stories ive heard, but ive been using hot now properly for about a year. I have it hot hot and havent had any issues...i am selective with where i have it hot mind, wouldnt use it on old single framed windows but most people have double glazing anyway.

Any experiences?

Yip I've cracked a pane.

Double glazed unit and was using water way too hot. It was sub zero temps and I had it up to max to fill up my bucket with hot water and forgot to turn it down for WFP. Crack just shot across the small pane.

I would have thought a double glazed unit was more susceptible to thermal shock than a single glazed pane? Heat from inside the house will warm single pane but not the outer pane of a double glazed unit. In winter, double glazing always freezes more than single pane in my experience.

Georgian- leads or any frames where the glass can't flex has a risk of cracking but it does give you a slight warning if you listen lol,I've known glass to shatter in summer from the stress it's had put on it from hot WFP in winter. Boffin  I once spoke to told me that cleaning in winter with really hot water will stress the glass over time although not to the naked eye even in summer months,I've known a few hot water WC,s said customer told them they had a window just go pop on them ie completely shatter for  no reason.

Yep, I had one go in low temps with water around 30. Went with a bang and cost me £103

I've had two go neither of them were in the winter. Bother were older wooden double glazing and the water wasn't particularly hot either, they boat must have had a weakness in the glass
