cleaning the sills?
« on: November 06, 2014, 07:04:39 am »

After cleaning the sills, how you long you leave them before moving onto windows?  I got some
stains on my windows and think they might be from water dripping down onto windows from above sills which is dirty.

Try cleaning those stains off by hand. Most likely they will be water marks from years of rain dripping onto them and baking on.

It's a learned technique you also have to use,

Firstly planning which windows to do first so that you give the ledges the most time to stop dripping,

And also when your cleaning the ledge do it in a swiping motion which takes off most if the excess water already.

Sorry I meant frames.  When you clean the frames particularly above the windows how long do you wait before doing the windows below?     I had stains on window and think it might be water dripping down.

I don't clean frames on a regular clean but when I do I clean all frames on the house then go back round the glass.
Reasons being prices on rounds bought and going rates are not high enough for that service.
However I am trying to introduce it locally and find that one or two frames then clean the glass works for me (so far) Perseverance with some frames will be required.

Frames cleaned every time.

Get them clean and then all they need is a quick wipe over.

The problem comes when you don't clean them very often, that let's dirt build up and makes your job harder.

On some jobs I clean the frames with the wet brush but with the water flow turned off. This works well especially on the top frame of older wooden joinery.

Its it a bay window that the marks are on? Because sometimes the water drips on the bay window roof and then as it trickles down the window blows it onto the glass after we leave.
The way i clean these problem windows is to clean the front top 2 windows, then go round the back and clean as normal then come to the front and clean the bottom 2, but of a pain but works

Not cleaning the frames every time with wfp is a big no no

Cleaning the frames every time is easier and quicker in the long run.

The biggest problem is cleaning above vents, I'm getting a bit of work from a newbie because of this.
I can see the runs he's left on the glass while cleaning next doors.

some vents will leave runs but not many the vast majority you can get away with cleaning above the top of them....just don't get any water up inside the vent and they're fine.

Have to disagree with this, yes some vents don't cause any problems but that will be due to the frame design, but 90% of vents
leak to some degree its just some don't run onto the glass.
Again most of its down to luck and the type of frames on your round but don't take it for granted because some don't have
problems then nobody will.

I have a pole to which I attach a sponge wrapped with a damp microfiber, I run this along the top of all the frames
removing the dirt and spiders webs before cleaning the rest with pure.
Yes it means taking two poles out each time but the time saved by not having to rinse broken spiders webs off the glass
more than makes up for it.
Plus no crap on the brush.

If your cleaning a window that has a couple of openers then putting water above them also risks
the water sitting on the opener seals and dripping down between the openers onto the glass below.

What I do is wipe above with the water off or completely miss until dirty then clean them risking drips.

Could you just leave the top frames and even sills on the first floor?   Surely they won't see it anyway.   Is it worth going up on a ladder every now and then and checking it all to clean it.

I have a long unger pole I usually use for trad and guttering.  Will do what you do and see how it turns out.

Buzzing mate, you just need to crack on with the WFP'ing. Youll learn as you go and work it out for yourself.mas you go. The worse than can happen is that you lose a customer for being crap or have to go back and reclean. You'll be a WFP master in a month any old idiot could do the manual part of this job.
