not enough!!!    but as a fairly new start up im happy with my growth its going well generally speaking.
Waiting to see how quiet the next few months will be for me...............
Definatley wouldnt have wanted to start up with no other income coming in..........

When you say "income" do you mean Turnover or Drawings, as they are 2 different items on your accounts, and i dont think  that anybody is going to disclose either of them, all I will say is I am Turning over below the VAT threshold and I would not want to trade above the threshold as an owner /operator.

And it's not all about money cc .

For a lot it fits in with their life and not with a employers .

I don't work many hrs as I have rhumatoid Arthritis and a single parent so this job is worth £50,000 a year as that's what I would have to earn to do  what I do now . Every school holiday off start at 11 finish at 2pm
No body telling what to do time off when I want it .

Money is just a score card 95% will have higher scores than me but I'm winning

If I could hit £350 every day I work and be finished for 2.30pm I would be happy.

I get lots of £350 days but not consistently .

If I could cut down my £700 monthly leaflet bill I'd be happier as well

Is there a reason for asking? Or are you pleased with your income and want to feel smug compared to others? Alternatively, do you feel you could do better and want to know what you can aspire towards?

My answer would be to earn enough to enjoy a good work/life balance; save regularly; build up a business that can then be sold for good money and retire (if you are lucky) early from a need to generate income. And, yes, I've done all that just from cleaning carpets and upholstery.

About 10 years ago I was speaking to someone who worked at the Inland Revenue. They told me that they have benchmark median earnings for each type of business. This is to give them an idea of what the average for each group should be so they can monitor any large discrepancies. At the time she said that carpet cleaning net income was at around £15,000.

I too only work short hours, Only advertising is internet presence. A lot of repeats and referrals though.

What's the VAT threshold? Somewhere around £75,000 isn't it?

From what I can see, if you wanted to 'work hard', including some weekends, only take 4 weeks holiday a year, and be good at running a business (especially marketing) I can see someone turning over £70,000+ a year in this game.

John, your one man band customers who are VAT registered are they carpet cleaners only or do they do restoration work such as floods etc ?

Cleaners, not conversant with what they all do. I know some stick to carpets but others will mix in hard floors and pressure washing.
Restoration guys I deal with are all VAT registered.

The Vat threshold is 81 thousand pounds,you lucky feckers.Here in Ireland its only 29.000 thousand pounds(37.000 euro.

che2clean, are you sure about 37k? think is lower a bit, can you provide some weblink to that info.
easy to make a turnover over 30 some k so need to be carefull. 13.5% extra to the bill that i could not claim much back is a bit of pain.

I had two thoughts for making this topic.

Firstly I am new in this business and main thing was to ensure that in future I can make a living from it plus additional services such as driveway cleaning may give decent earnings.
Secondly as well I had to ensure I didn't jump into deep water where already there are hundreds of companies across the country.
Of course I went with an idea for this business because I like it I really do. Enjoyable. From the other hand in some point I expect that one day I'll leave my job and cc will become my main plan.

Threshold value - how interpreted in practice? Notional “Tax exclusive”
value.
In the past there have been problems in interpreting the application of the
thresholds. The “12 monthly” thresholds of €37,500 (services) and €75,000
(supply of goods) should be treated as referring to the notional “tax exclusive”
element of a traders turnover. For example, a trader whose annual purchases
of stock for resale are, say, €67,000 (€55,372 plus €11,628 VAT at 21.5%)
and whose actual turnover is, say €85,000, is not obliged to register. This is
because the trader’s turnover, after deduction of the €11,628 VAT charged to
him or her on the purchases of stock, is below the registration limit of
€75,000.
