Cheque with the wrong name.
« on: October 24, 2014, 05:01:03 pm »
Customer has sent me a £30 cheque and made it out to David Williams - I'm tempted to alter it what do you think?

Stick  it through as it is, if it's only one in a bundle it will probably get missed, i get my surname spelt wrong all the time and the get paid in no problem.

Someone I know used to get cheques in his business name, and he would just cross it out and put his name.

Never once had one rejected. Haha.

I've altered one before, just initial the correction as if the customer has done it. I often have to sign cheques too- when the customer has forgotten to!! ;D

I've had several come back when the business name is wrong. In fact I've just called someone now telling them that their cheque would get rejected cos the name was wrong. Local chippy so I'm collecting cash tonight as I'm going to be passing. For me it's happened so often it's not worth risking it as it just a hassle.

Some banks are lazy (mine included)  I just put it in the middle of a few cheques and it goes through....

In a previous job, providing banking services to soldiers in places where there's no banks, I always ended up with a bunch of badly written cheques from semi-illiterate squaddies.

So, being lazy, instead of chasing each soldier up and trying to find where he was, I'd just make the changes myself - using a similar pen to the one that the soldier used - and scribble what I thought looked like the initials of the soldier by the amendment.

Never had a problem and I must've done this with hundreds of cheques.Obviously adding zeros and increasing the amount wouldn't be very clever.

Wonder how many do change the amount and get away with it.

Not many.  It'd be a really stupid and idiotic kind of fraud.  Easy to spot, trace, and prove.  And for the small amount anyone thinks they may get away with, would it be worth it?

Only an idiot would do that kind of thing.
