I'm coming up to thirty eight this year but I think I could be on the wrong forum. Every one on here seems to be well over fifty - why is that?

Is it a job for old men?

Because when you're young you think that the wage-slave job you're doing is fun and well-paid enough.  So you do it till you're ready for suicide.  Suddenly even window cleaning looks worthwhile.  Then you discover it's not a bad way to make a living.

By which time you're just about ready to retire.

Vin

Spot on, plus as you get older and grumpier you can no longer put up with managers who haven't a clue and are only in the position because of brown nosing.
God I don't miss those types.

I got fed up of all that at 21 ... luckily i had lots of self employed friends and family so saw the light early on :)
I complain about this job constantly but i know its the only way id have it now, i am 100% unemployable

You say that, but if they price well, money wise they will be earning three times what the average young bloke is earning.

Most people leave school / uni go into a job / career as this is what we are programmed to do from an early age.

Then u get fed up of job / career and think there must be another way.

For me at 42 I hated my job running the sales department of a Toyota dealer and one day had a eureka moment when after our windie sacking me for being a crap payer  :-[ I had to do them myself ... neighbour popped out and said jokingly give you a tenner if you do mine .... then mind process went hmmmm ten houses a day @ £10 is £100 .... errrr that £500 a week ...... hang on this cant be right that's not possible .... got calculator out ... did some maths .... suddenly realised this could work ..... joined this forum  ..... did a few hours canvassing and got a customer on second house ... rest is history.
