Gas vs Diesel hot water set up
« on: October 14, 2014, 09:30:27 am »
I myself use a gas set up with a flue, I wouldn't change to diesel due to the costs being 10 percent to than of a diesel system,
insured with a-plan and they know about the set up in the van no issues,

how can a so called "pro" diesel set up be any better?

I would not change to diesel as they have much more repairs and expensive drake downs. All the negativity about gas really have not grounds and is fed by folk who quite often have never owned a gas fired system. They are a cheaper option and as for the fumes its just makes me laugh as many use a potable gas heater in there homes with out problems .

To be honest, even if I had pots of cash I don't think id have a diesel system over my propane heater now.

I've never met anyone who has one that runs for more than 6 months constant use without dying and having to spend hundreds on it for repair.

I've had three winters out oft heater, cost me £100.

Aslong as your sensible and got them properly they are very safe.

Ive been using lpg heaters for 6 or 7 years with no problems at all.
I would never swap to a deisel unit, there's absolutely no need imo, lpg works perfectly & seeing that i use a refillable gas tank, i call at the garage once per week to fill up with gas and deisel so easy and quick.

These portable shower/water heaters are designated for outside use only.

That's not to say your van is "outside" but perhaps they produce fumes differently to an indoor heater ?

As long as you have a flue or plenty of fresh air blowing through the van the danger maybe minimal, but until someone blows themselves to Kingdom come or gasses themselves to death we will presume they are safe to use!

Personally I don't think you can beat an immersion heater

You could have the same argument about untrained people putting an electrical units into water, wont be happy till someone zaps themselves to death????
Personally, i think immersion heaters are fine if you want to stop your water freezing at night or at the brush head, but if you want controllable heat, really hot for con' roof, g/f/s cleans and luke warm for cold day cleans on old fragile glass, you cant beat the lpg.

Yep of course, like anything not fitted correctly can be dangerous.

I'm not saying otherwise, but some get very tetchy if the safety aspect is mentioned regarding gas.

We could not get a definitive answer (in writing) stating we would be fully insured using a heater of this kind and carrying LPG gas cylinder on board.

I've seen setups where the gas bottle just rolls around in the back, no proper restraints, I've also seen LPG tank fire wipe out 3 houses in less than 30 mins.

There are some excellent set ups as well.

But the law in this country is weird, sometimes what's deemed safe to use domestically may not be allowed to be used as a trade tool. Ladders is a case in point.

I would (if money no object) have diesel BUT for the cost to benefit ratio it's not an option. They are a nice to have not a must have.

No sorry, if we could get a definitive answer in writing from the insurance companies then I would consider it, even then for the amount of time it's needed and the benefit it would bring, weighed against the cost of buying/running with all the extra space it takes up I still doubt we would use gas heaters
