how do I get to rank better on google and others.
« on: October 13, 2014, 08:07:02 am »
Anyone know how to improve my ranking on search engines without having to spend loads of money with someone?

I was contacted by a company who say Apple use Bing (I had never heard of it) so did a search and my site hardly shows, my competitor does and he is also higher than me on google.
There must be a bunch of things I can do without having to spend loads but I don't have a clue.
Help Please...

get someone who specialises in SEO. if you want results, you're going to have to spend money.

I did and was the best thing I've done

Its getting harder to get decent ranking, mostly because of the huge increase in competition - here's a few of the basics though:

1. Fresh, unique content is what Google loves, lots of it. So minimum 6 pages with a decent amount of text on each of them, ZERO copying & pasting "borrowed" text from other sties, and a blog page that you regularly update with fresh company news & special offers.
2. Use the google keyword tool to find out what relevant keywords are being searched by people in your area - these are usually the names of your services and the names of the towns you work in but regional quirks of language mean that in some places "Window cleaner" is searched 10x more than "window cleaning" - research what your audience search and target these keywords.
3. Make your page titles informative to Google - instead of "Home, about us, window cleaning, contact us" try something like "Window Cleaners in (insert town name), About (area name) window cleaning services, professional window cleaning in (insert area name), Contact (insert area name) window cleaners)" etc etc.
4. H1 and H2 tags have become very important recently -  so make sure you use them on every page and take the same approach with them as with your page titles.
5. Meta description tags are used by many search engines to generate the "snippet" that is visible in the search results, so write these tags to be appealing to searchers.
6. If its in your page titles, meta description & H tags, it needs to be in your on-page text too.
7. Dont spam keywords - don't repeat the same keyword more than once every 150 words.
8. Google has gotten very good at distinguishing between content and structure of a website recently, so packing keywords into the page footer doesn't work very well any more.
9. Internal links between pages (Not just the main menu) can really help google to find ALL the pages on your website quickly, so hyperlink any relevant words to the pages they refer to.
10. Submit your site via google webmaster tools, verify it and upload a sitemap.
11. Link your social media business pages to the website, and every 4th or 5th post on your social media wall try including a link back to a specific page on your website
12. Get a google places listing
13. Signup for as many free online business directories as you can find & include your website in the listing
14. Have your web address in ALL your forum signatures and e-mail signatures
15. Make sure your website is smartphone/tablet friendly - over 50% of browsing is now done via mobile devices and if a viewer sees your site isn't easy to view & clicks back to Google this can give you a huge "bounce rate" - Google sees visitors bouncing and thinks your site isn't relevant for that search, so reduces your ranking accordingly,... this is something that is getting more & more important!

There's loads more - but those are the basics,..

Hi Nat .... apology to OP for hijacking thread.

Reading all that has hurt my head  :)

seriously though I have done some of that but will be asking you to rebuild my website with all of your tricks etc

my question is this when you redo my website will my old one stay up and running on its domain then disappear when we switch to new host ... currently with 1and1

Hi Ian,
Yep, would love to do a school website - I did this one for my daughters school a while back: www.gaelscoildehide.com  ;D

When building a new website its often best to build it on a new domain because even with all those tricks Google can be fickle & it does sometimes take a while to get decent rankings - so until the new site is performing well I like to keep both sites live & then when we're sure everything on the new site is working right we can forward the old domain to the new website too,.. or if the old website isn't costing much you always have the option of keeping both & having double the Google exposure. :)

Sorry to jump in as well and mither you nat. I typed in "free website report" into google the other day and ran the report...it came out at 41%. Do you pay these much respect?

Nope - 99% of those reports are complete nonsense and often the advice they give is both outdated and too generic to do any good.

I use a guy on www.peopleperhour.com to do SEO reports for me - he keeps up to date with the latest Google news/tips/tricks and gives a much shorter human generated report that is more relevant to your site and its target audience. Its really worth spending the money as Google changes so often that its impossible to keep up unless you're doing noting but SEO full time.
This is one of his listings - he normally has a more basic option for £35, but i can't see it on his profile at the moment: http://www.peopleperhour.com/hourlie/100-custom-seo-website-audit-fix-all-errors-increased-rankings-traffic/132824?ref=listings

Wow a superb response, thanks guys and especially Nathanael.

It seems everyone only ever mentions Google, are sites like Bing and others not really relevant anymore?

wont that effect my google rankings by starting all over again or will the new site catch up quickly due to being better googleized (for want of better word)

If I see a domain I like should I nab it now then just swap it over to your hosting when time is right ?

Other search engines like Bing & Yahoo do bring traffic - but Google is by far the largest so its the best place to concentrate your efforts. Once you've got it right in Google, then see waht you can do in the others. :)

Yep it does mean starting from scratch with SEO on a new domain - this means it takes a while to get off the ground, but it gives you the safety net of your old domain/website continuing to work until the new one is properly up and running - so yep, register a new domain if you spot one you like. :)

Even your choice of domain can affect search rankings - most people go for their name or company name eg www.joeblogswindowcleaning.com but if people are searching for "Joe Blogs Window Cleaning" then they already know of you or are a current customer,.. its much better to go for an area name in the URL like www.manchesterwindowcleaner.com and then you'll catch more local searches.
