pressure washing from tank
« on: October 10, 2014, 02:41:26 pm »
I need to pressure wash with pure water, so i need to use a low LPM washer because the tank will run dry before it will fill with pure. I dont have a small PW that will draw from a tank only one that uses tap feed.
My question is, will the weight of the water in a 750L tank be enough to feed the PW if the outlet is at the bottom or will it definately need a tap feed?

Cheers

Alan

A long time ago - 12 years, I tried to set up a trailer mounted set up.

I had a Karcher 745, a decent generator, a tank, the work was to clean a load of perimeter walling to council properties in the Stoke on Trent region.

So I stuck everything onto this flat trailer and off I went to get on with it.

Started off brilliant, cleaning away, counting the coinage!!!

The machine was not and is not a draw from a tank machine, despite being large and with a reasonably decent flow, pressure - Whether it was down to the water being reduced in the tank and being less heavy or some internal part not being forced to push water into the pump I don't know.

It worked and I limped through and got it done, spoke to my service people and they said the only electric machine that will cope with drawing from a tank is the, can't remember it's name, the big electric one ( that is not it's name).

What machine are you using and why are you needing to use pure water?

Why not set up your current system and see if it will do it. I can tell you it won't. Someone else may tell you it will but try it out 1st and then you know with confidence, either way.

We have been asked to WFP some white plastic cladded ceilings, about 2000m2, but brushing ceilings is hard work. Tap water will leave spots. It is only a wash down to get rid of dust and cob webs.
A 15LPM machine that draws from a tank will mean taking lots of tea breaks while filling the tank catches up.
I have a domestic PW at 7LPM but it wont draw water.
Instead of trying to set it all up, i thought i'd ask the question.

I cannot see that machine working but i may be wrong.

With 7 LPM you may really struggle with cobwebs as well. I can hit them with full flow and they don't want to let go.

Price it for the hard work.

Haven't seen it but I would WFP with pure water if you need the finish.

AJ I seen on the other thread that the cladding is external and 4-5 metres high. Do you really think that you will see hard water marks on plastic cladding at that height?/I don't think you would.

I think what you are seeing is just c**p running out from in between the cladding where they clip together and I really don't think pure water will help much for the amount of effort that you will put into it. I think you just need to just rinse a lot more mate.

Just use a smaller nozzle to reduce the flow. Stick a 03 or a 02 on it and drop it right down to 10lpm or 6/7lpm. The rest of the water will return to tank.

Simples.  ;D

Maybe you could pressure wash at 15lpm using tap / drum source and then when done rinse with pure water?

You can add rinse aid to a snow foam bottle and rinse down

Basically, if you have a petrol pressure washer with a good quality triplex pump, it will work from a tank and also the mains. It is advisable to set it up so it is gravity fed, so has a pipe connected to the bottom of the tank and feed the pressure washer on the ground, you should use a minimum 25mm inside diameter pipe for the feed pipe. Allow the water to run freely through the feed pipe and remove any trapped air before connecting to the pressure washer.  It is also advisable to have a return to tank pipe fitted from the unloader bypass valve to allow any water not being pumped to the lance to be returned to the tank. This way the pump will run cool and not overheat and you will not lose any water.
The flow rate can be reduced by turning the unloader valve adjuster anti-clockwise. This redirects a proportion of the water flow back into the tank, this is OK for short periods, but will reduce pump life if used like this continuously. It is always best to use the maximum design flow of the pump, by having the unloader adjuster turned fully clockwise. The flow rate can be reduced by reducing engine rpm. These engines are designed to run at around 3400 to 3600rpm. If you reduce this to 2800rpm the pressure and flow rate will reduce by approx. 25%.

The Hyundai HYW4000P is a proper pressure washer. It features an Italian Annovi Reverberi direct drive triplex pump and 14hp Hyundai 420cc engine. I would be happy recommending this for professional use.
Most of the petrol pressure washers on ebay etc have reasonable engines, but the pumps are the weak area.
It is essential to invest in a recognised brand triplex pump that you can buy spares for. Most good (normally Italian) brand triplex pumps will last for years if you can get seals and valve kits for them.
Avoid all axial pumps if you are a professional user. They will not last.
Also - ensure that you keep cool water flowing through your pump - the water cools and lubricates the pump. Without it, the pistons can crack and seals distort.

I'd be interested in your comments on the BE Pressure range. Is there anything we need to do to make it more suitable for your businesses?

Most people are running pumps with slightly higher flow than 15lpm  maybe in the 17/21 lpm bracket . Also return to tank unloaders are a must....k series.
Glad somebody is giving duel pumps a run for there money...best of luck.
