I have a tin can type of savings thing that can only be opened with a can opener ... throw the odd fiver in and a percentage of any large jobs I get also stick any coppers and silver into a large glass sweet jar.

Opened metal can this weekend and found I had £640 quid in there ! glass jar normally comes in at £100 when Ive filled it. Gave money to missus for winter fund.

Be careful your Mrs does not buy a handbag with that money, to store the winter fund in. Mine would  ;D

I've got 3k put by for the tax man. He's not having it though - I've just clicked the skip button on 20k worth of work in George - works a treat.

I put all my change into a safe in my office. Anything from £10 to %0 a day. Pays for all my holidays etc.

I also used to be terrible with money, living from month to month. A wife and young family changed that though.

Does anyone pay themselves a wage?
You'd have to be disciplined but it could help you be more disciplined.
I've done something based very loosely on this in the past but soon got lax again.
It's more like an easily achievable living allowance every week or month. If you earn more don't touch it and if you do less, dip in. It can mean you're less motivated but also less stressed.

I stick a couple of hundred away per month. Not needed it last 2 winters, but it's not just for that. Vehicle emergencies etc.
No still don't understand, I must be thick

I put £250 a week by, this is for tax, spare fund in case of emergency, holidays and anything else I might need a wedge for.
