In order to get a good spray pattern from my Vikan brush I need to have the water turned up much higher than I think is necessary and I am getting through a lot more water than I think I should.
If I turn it down I just get two rather pathetic jets that are OK for washing but not much good for rinsing off.

My question is this. Are the jets adjustable ? I don't want to start experimenting without knowing what I am doing.

we too had the problem that we were using too much water until we came across one of the guys from this site on a road that we were working on and we stood with him and watched him clean some windows....then we realised just how much water we were using compared to him, believe me when i say that those two rather pathetic jets are probably( cant see em so cant be sure)all you need. it really is quite suprising how little water is required.

vince, i got the same problem, found out it was down to haveing  the wrong spray nozzles.  got the low pressure nozzles from cleantech and i have the best fan spray you could get,also less water used. jouk45

This way I know it is "eco friendly" I use average of 1/4 bucket of water per house. You can do with less if you all try.

hi you might want to try smaller nozzels i also have found that using microbore hose helps with water use i use a powerpole best thing i've ever bought i on average using 250litres per day

How do you do it?  Is it as fast as using 1 to 2 litres per minute?

I'm guessing you just wet the windows, then cut your water-flow all-together; scrub with just the brush; then turn the water on and rinse!

I would also be interested in how jeff does it also.

I have managed to cut the water right down to about 3/4 ltr a minute but takes me twice as long to rinse it.
So i didn't really think there was any saving there.
So now i use 1 1/2 ltrs a minute and get a really good flow on the rinse so i can clean quicker.

Now which is best as at the end of the day i probably used the same amount of water.

Low flow takes longer
Fast flow a lot quicker.

So the extra water you use on a faster flow get you finished quicker and probaly uses the same amount of water as the low flow rate.

If you know what i mean.

do you mean you get finished quicker...or you run out of water and have to finish earlier....theyr'e not the same thing....we had terrible trouble running out of water when we started with wfp, and like i said we didnt realise how much we were using until we saw john from Classic doing some windows, now we dont use so much.

Never needed to use 1-2 litres/min. I have always used a bpac which I mostly wear, weighs about 15kg with 9 litres water. I have a switch on the pac near my hip for quick on/off. If you agree that you need to scrub the windows then using a flow of 2L/min is not needed when scrubbing, I simply scrub with the lower flow rate then rinse and scrub with 4 over the top pencil jets. Hphobic glass I may need to rinse 1-2 min later after a very fast initial scrub.
Water off between windows with the hipswitch, or when using as a trolley , an autobrush,. But generally because I am using a low flow rate it doesnt matter if I leave the water on in between close windows too much.
Just done a minging school that hadnt been done for 10 years the same way, except that because the dirt was crusty had to clean them 3 times- just like everyone else.
I only use on average 50 litres/day and have started putting "Eco-friendly, uses only 1/4 bucket of water per house" in my advertising, ahead of any drought orders. Have also removed any reference to "wash" and gone back to "reach to clean" as ultimately its going to be the customers view that counts.

If i have a higher flow i can work faster as it makes it a lot easier rinsing
So in turn do get finished earlier.
Not very often i run out come close sometimes though.

If i use a lower flow it takes longer to rinse the window so takes longer to do the job.

I also think if i am using a lower flow and its taking me longer that i am probably using roughly the same amount of water as i would on a higher flow but work quicker.

I will have to have two days this week one day on a really low flow and one day on a high flow and see what differance there is.
Whether i can do the same amount of work in the same time with both flow rates.
And see if there is much differance in the water consumption

Thanks for all the replies and the good advice. My water usage is gross compared to the figures given by the other contributors.
I am going to talk to cleantech about some better nozzles
