Fitting new hose to reel ?
« on: August 05, 2014, 02:51:06 pm »
Last time I done this a few year's back I got into a helluva tangle as soon as I opened the hose from the packaging.

Any pointer's as what not to do wrong this time, there must be a smart way to do this I missed the last time.

Take it from the outside.
Get someone to poke a broom handle through the centre and reel it off.
Hold on tight though!

It's just the internet. Try not to worry.

I took the first one from the outside and got into a helluva tangle.  I took the second one from the outside and got into a helluva tangle.

For the third and fourth ones I took them down one side of my street (this side of the street is very quiet and over 100 meters long) and reeled it in from there.

Do it on a sunny day in an empty street.

Attach one end of the hose to the reel.

Then walk backwards away from the van, rolling the hose off its roll as if it's on a reel.  This stops you adding one twist for each loop on the reel.  It's hard on your back but it's worth it.

When the hose is all on the floor, take the end and walk back to the van.  Turn pump on to fill the hose with water then turn it off and attach the end fitting.  Have a sandwich/cup of coffee/pick your nose  for ten minutes.  The hose will soften nicely in the sun.

Turn on the pump to pressurise the hose so it's as big as it's ever going to be.  Reel it in.

Vin's method is very good if there is just 1 of you. If there are 2 of you and you do not want to reel it out then I use the following method.

1. Unwrap the hose from packaging and taking the end of the hose from the outside of the reel fit the connector needed to connect to the reel.
2. Connect to the center of the reel.
3. One person holds the hose roll in the middle and unwinds it as a 2nd person reels it onto the hose reel.
4. Ensure that the hose is not tightly reeled on to the hose reel in order to allow for expansion space of the hose when under pressure. This will prevent damage to the hose reel when under pressure.

I must be different - I always feed mine on from the inside of the reel. I'll find out when my string of sausages gets replaced yet again soon  :o

take the loose end of the hose and shut the back doors of your van on it. Get a mate to hold the coil of hose and drive off.

I bought a new 100m of hose thinking my other hose was knackered as it kept coming off the reel in big loops and getting tangled around the spindle. The new one is doing the same. Suppose my reel is knackered?

Oh, and I drove to an industrial estate to change the hose and got the Mrs to pull my hose off. She fell about laughing for some reason   ::)roll
