Father and Son working together?
« on: April 04, 2006, 01:02:09 pm »
Hi everyone
What do you all think of family working together? it just about a year ago I told my dad he can come and work for me when I can afford him a monthly wage. Because he hate his job and his boss. My dad Said to me it be good if I and him work together.  I come and work for you son ;D[ this is my dad smiling at me]
Now don't get me wrong I love my dad but he drive me mad :(. All my life I have alway had a fall out with my dad over somthing small and most of the time I don't even remember what it was all about. My Mum say that because we are so alike. :'(
The only thing is that my dad is 53 and so fed up.  I feel sorry for him but I know that the day he will come and work for me I will reget it forever.
I don't know if I should be writing this on here or send this to Deidre from The Sun Newpaper ???

My mum and I are very similar personalities and she has worked for me for 9 years now.  It has caused no problems for me......and she really is an excellent employee & mum.
The difference being, we do not argue or row...and never really have.

Does Dad need full time work?
Perhaps you could have a huge advertising campaign & set him up with the tools to run a small round for you. That way, you'll not be working together and I'm sure you could cope with a 15 minute meeting every morning in the local cafe!  Just a suggestion.
I know I was nervous about employing family, but my mum really hated her job and it was starting to affect her health.  I am now glad I took the risk.

I worked with my dad for years, we had plenty of rows but nothing serious. If you have enough work why not take him on there are sure to be more advantages than dissadvantages. If he really wants to work for you go for it.

Yes if my dad come to work for me it will have to be full time. He did say he not asking for big wage. But he want to do window cleaning which is what I am trying to say. it about what he want and what he want to do. He the sort of bloke who don't like to be told what to do so I don't think he will like to be told what to do by his son.
Good on you and your mum. My mum and I never really argue. she a good mate and mother to me and she would be a good employee but she like her job.
Look like I gonna have to tell my dad it not gonna happen :'(

I worked with my dad straight after sixth form, until last year, we worked together for about four years. I'm only on my own now, as I get more money!
But I never had any problems with working with my dad, but then I worked for him, not him working for me. But we still work together now once or twice a week, and I have no problems. Even though we work on my round sometimes, I dont try to boss him around.
Could he do the backs, and you do the fronts? That way you wouldnt see much of each other anyway!

turn the situation around - you'd be glad of some help, seriously I worked part-time with my dad and it was the best thing I've done, of course I annoyed him silly but it definitely made us closer so I'd say go for it.

Your Pops might be doing your head in right now, but what about the company? I used to work for my dad for years before i set up on my own, and we really annoyed the hell out of each other. He used to rub the steering wheel with his thumb between hjobs - DROVE ME UP THE WALL!!!!

But recently we've ended up working together again on fridays. We haven't in years, and to tell you the truth, i've really missed it! Sometimes flying solo can do your nut in. At least come friday, i know i can have a bit of a laff and chat about cars and customers.

Mind you, that steering wheel thing still annoys the hell out of me..

David.  I'm biased.  I worked with my dad straight from school and it was a nightmare.  However, this has nothing to do with how it might be if you work with your dad.  Different people, different time, different circumstances.  All I would suggest is to listen to your gut feeling.  Would this be more likely to improve your relationship with him or would it be more likely to detract from it?  You don't have to answer here of course but it may be worth mulling over.

I'd think along the lines of what Lizzy wrote.

If you have enough work set him a round or try and get more work in to build one.

You could then arrange to meet on the big and awkward jobs to work together.

I know if i was to work with my dad we'd get on fine

but employing other members of the family can be different because they are family they think they can take the p**S

I tried my brother working with me years ago it lasted 2 days, he didnt like me telling him what to do

For years now ive had my cousin working with me known as 'broken flask' because he knows i rely on him he sets the rules, takes time off when he likes constantly taking the p**S even down to having a pay rise or he wont work.
Ive had him working for me for years but now its finally time to get shut of him, im going to look out for a young lad whos hard working that shows me and my business some respect and i will look after him well.

So be warned when employing family, especially mine

Dont let any employee doesnt matter who they are think that they are indespensable like i have

Go with your instincts on this - really really really don't do it! Did I say really? I meant it - seriously!

He used to rub the steering wheel with his thumb between hjobs - DROVE ME UP THE WALL!!!!

Mind you, that steering wheel thing still annoys the hell out of me..

I don't know if I should ask this - but what is an hjob? Cuz by the sound of it I wouldn't want my dad doing one while rubbing my van steering wheel! ;D
It's a game of three halves!
