On Meridian this morning they were interviewing a representative from southern water.  He tried to brush aside the leaks that the company have by coming out with an excuse that they are working on them.  
They then questioned him about reservoirs, again lame excuse saying that the reservoirs we've got are adequate or somthing along those lines.
Here comes the best one... He was asked why don't they move water from the north down to the south where there is a so called shortage... two excuses came forward-
No 1 - It would cost too much as water is very heavy.
No 2 - It is the wrong type of water

How can it be the wrong type of water? If soft water which is up north is piped down to the south which is generally a hard water area, when mixed together will they explode??  Maybe to be able to mix soft and hard water together is rocket science.   So chaps, be very careful that you don't come into contact with pure water and hard water at the same time.... You may just find yourself in orbit!!!

Maybe Southern Water has taken on the same PR that the railways use.

I was listening to the radio at the weekend about 'rain' and the Southern Water bloke did actually mention about the wrong type of 'rain'.

It was something to do with 'heavy downpours' go down the drain to quick and don't soak into the ground and down to the water table like long prolonged slight rain does.

It sounded a bit like like a bit of an excuse to me.

Mind you I worked on the railways when that famous 'wrong type of snow' comment was made and it was true.

Light powdery snow, as opposed to wettish heavy snow, gets dragged up by the upcurrents created by the movement of the train and then sucked into the air intakes that cool the motors. Then it melts and blows all the motor fuses.

Down here at the time each 4 car unit had one motor coach with 4 motors. I remember leaving Victoria with a 12 car train (with 3 motor coaches - 12 motors) and by the time time it got to Brighton, 2 hours late, it only had 2 working motors and everyone moaned like hell.

Maybe the water people are telling the truth but there again .....

  .  .  .  regretably there is a 'wrong type of rain' or more to the point a 'wrong type' of ground when it rains.

 If the ground is dry, rainwater 'runs off' the top so it does not soak into the ground and then into the underground systems which later collect into the deep natural underground reservoirs and hence into our water reserves. If the ground is already wet and permeable it soaks quickly down into these reservoirs and gives us the volumes of water we need.

its about time the top management in this country, including the governments, adopted a more pro-active attitude to many areas of concern and stopped the ridiculous knee-jerk responses seen over the last 20 years or so! its not only water - its collection, retention  and distribution but also gas. Its a known fact that north sea gas would run out around 2008-10 but all of a sudden because its happened early we are paying for management mistakes and poor respones!

Today we were at a rich person's house and he was filling up his outside swimming pool.

I jokingly said, despite my own opinions on the subject, that he'd best keep an eye out for the Southern Water spy helicopter.

It turns out that any hose pipes bans, non essential use of water bans, etc, don't apply to someone who has a licenced swimming pool.

He showed me the letter from Southern Water stating just that.

You are not wrong.
One major concern the authorities have is that much of the 3% of the planet's water ="fresh water" is contaminated or polluted long term, due to manufacturing processes and abuses, and is so costly to restore to potable water, that what is immediately available needs to be conserved. 
Another major concern is climate change, which is altering how and where rain is falling and rivers rising or lowering, flood and drought areas are not so predictable.

It turns out that any hose pipes bans, non essential use of water bans, etc, don't apply to someone who has a licenced swimming pool.

Hose pipe bans don't affect private pools, but non-essential use bans (that are imposed as the result of drought orders) do.

At the meeting with Sutton & SE Water, there was a guy from some pools association there whinging about not being able to top up pools.  He actually put a reasonable case forward.

The water companies said tough luck mate (in a nutshell)
