Why would you need to remind people the carpet is dirty?

You're not, you're reminding them to have their dirty carpet cleaned. :o

And that you were the person that cleaned them last time , it's about keeping in touch with your customers ..

I don't believe so, it this age where everything is done online it's refreshing to get a physical piece of mail addressed properly to your customer.
The cost of the stamp is insignificant when you compare it to the cost of acquiring the customer in the first place.

I just send basic reminder letters, seems to work fine for me, nothing fancy cause I have no clue how to even Format a design for a card or a letter so sometimes basic is best

Why not get a load of images and make cards from various holiday destinations and photoshop on an image of your van. They aren't gonna expect that are they?

Picture of the pyramids with a TM and a hose on it or your van parked on the water front at Sydney harbour etc.

Could probably get them made on fiverr or elance in a couple of days for a few quid then get them printed up. Be great at this time of year.

Be great if they stuck it up on their fridge or notice board for friends to see.

Could even get creative and send friends and relatives off on holiday with a few and get them to send them from another country for you.

I used to do exactly that. Take a load of address labels with me. Go to nearest cheapo stand when I got there and send about 50 cards to building managers and key clients.

Would take me 20 mins of my hols but is last thing they expect to receive.

Card with an elephant on it,using it's trunk to hose it's self down

"Don't forget ,your carpets are also due a clean"

Simple message , nice image non intrusive.

Invoice is in the post ;D

We mailshot our customers once every so often with some gentle reminders. But what ever the message (as long as imformative and useful) the main thing is its a reminder that you are around and it puts cleaning back on their agenda. Always brings in jobs from existing costomers. We use docmail, whereby you design your own template upload and they print and send for you. Requires uploading an address file of course.
