Expensive Mistake
« on: June 30, 2014, 06:17:34 pm »
Went to look at a job today where another cc'er had cleaned the carpets.
There were some very nasty stains under the feet of the dining tables and smaller tables and some that appeared afterwards, so the client says. The client wanted to see if it could be fixed before claiming for a new carpet of the cc'er, I couldn't get them out. Also says the carpet was wet for days afterwards and apparently the guy isn't insured.
An expensive mistake costing around £1k + all for not putting protectors under the feet of furniture. Ouch  :'(

Seen many of these, even today. Always when i spot it i ask the customer if the carpet was cleaned before and then show them staining to be sure i will not be blamed for it.

thats what i thought Simon - so why did you attempt it and not just advise the customer of that and refer them to the other cleaner without charging them?

Simon did the client contact the original carpet cleaner initially to ask him to rectify this

I don't take on other people's mistakes. One look is enough to know to leave it well alone and let the guy who caused it sort it out.

I see this all the time on jobs where they have used another carpet cleaner in the past and I don't know if I have a different class of customer  :) but they either have not even noticed or are not really bothered by it  :o

Makes me wonder why I bother to make sure we don't make the same mistakes!

Its all so needless with a bit of thought and careful planning you can avoid this risk - if they dont insist on moving the tables (I always remove chairs) and sideboards etc you can clean around the feet without having to pad or slide - what the heck difference does it make anyway - you are just talking about the few sq centimetres under/below the table/sideboard legs which are going to be badly depressed anyway and probably with underlay thats failing so the furn marks are always going to be there - if they are moving the furniture fair enough where do you want it to be now? Fiddle arseing about worrying about the bits under the legs is a complete waste of time and makes a job twice as long - its the traffic lanes and the bits of carpet they LIVE ON that you need to worry about - spend the time getting those clean and you will have happy customers - its all about the "approach to the customer" - tell them what you are doing - most of them are perfectly sensible and reasonable and see what you are saying...

Wouldn't some hydrogen peroxide helped here ?  -  Might've saved the other cc paying out a £1k ?

But why would you want to own a cock up that is not of your doing? and why save a cowboy who doesn't have a clue what he is doing, whilst also giving carpet cleaners a bad name?

Simon is a bit long in the tooth to be that naive..  ;D

"But why would you want to own a cock up that is not of your doing? and why save a cowboy who doesn't have a clue what he is doing, whilst also giving carpet cleaners a bad name?"

Because for one I wouldn't own it as I'd make them sign a disclaimer and for two If most carpet cleaners are honest they would admit to making some mistakes along the way and three I dont like the thought of someone having to cough up 1k if its possible for it to be rectified.

It crossed my mind to give it a go because the guy was pressuring me to but thought the better of it.
The thing is that if you start to play the hero and try and fix problems like these then the guy who is responsible for it can claim that you've made them worse and I don't think it is fair to put the customer in that position when he is the injured party and entitled to the problem being taken care if the cc'er, who shouldn't have made such a basic mistake in the first place.
As ever, when something goes tits up it is always for the fussiest customer you ever came across and hence my not wanting to get involved.
We always put sticky tabs under every piece of furniture, wood or metal, whether it is being moved or not, and protective strips along the front if any static cabinets etc. some may think it OTT, but it looks professional and heads off any nightmare our friend is now going through.

Steve, I agree with you, to a point. But if you start messing with these type,of problems, disclaimer or not, you then alter the original damage and by doing so bring into doubt who is responsible for what as the cc'er can claim that you've made it worse and so make yourself culpable, which is bonkers.

I get a bit paranoid about customer moving furniture after we leave, so we do this rather than use tabs..... bit sad of me to actually have a photo of it 8) 8)
