Van making a grinding noise.. Video here
« on: June 28, 2014, 02:25:34 pm »
A while ago my van made a horrible noise, so i switched it off and back on again and it was fine for a few weeks.
This week the noise has gradually been happening more frequently.
Im just wondering firstly what the noise could be, and roughly a price to get it fixed.

Here's a receipt of the work carried out 16thousand miles ago to narrow the problem down.

Here's the link for the noise http://youtu.be/Uor22znzrHk. (The van drives fine even while making the noise)

Maybe a pully?

Or does the noise stop when you press down on the clutch?

I think the noise continues no matter what i do until i turn engine of and on, the noise gets a little higher pitch when revving

Hard to tell from a youtube video.
But it could be the bearings gone on the cam belt pulley, if so it needs to be sorted asap or could seize and snap the cam belt.
I would get it towed to a garage if I was you.

I have been driving it all week and drives fine, no warning lights, and 90% of the time no noise except the usual.  It gradually got more frequent and today i actually stopped working and brought it home until it gets fixed.

Just wondered if anyone else had this same problem or heard of it.

I had a similar sound. After a few minutes I figured out it was one of the exhaust supports. It had moved over slightly and was vibrating against the underneath of the van. Moved it over and hey presto, no more noise.

As someone else has already said, sounds more like a rattle to me than a grinding noise.
Check exhaust system underneath and that a rubber exhaust mount hasn't perished, could be vibrating against the heat shield as already mentioned or indeed the catalytic converter could be shot.

from experience pal that definately sounds like a idler pulley or tensioner on the aux belt, why not whip the belt off and check all the pulleys for roughness, play etc from bad bearings and also how new is the actual belt?

Do what Cheshire suggested, take the belt off, then start the engine and see if the noise goes.

I know nothing about cars what so ever! I will take it to a garage tomorrow and ask for a price before i do anything!
My mechanic also works full time so it could leave me out of work a few days if i leave it with him

That is a very clever response.  I think we're a bit like that in life in general.
