Big van or small van.
« on: June 21, 2014, 08:28:05 pm »
Currently have a vauxhall combo. I can fit all my cold washing gear in and have built shelving for brushes etc.  But if i need any chemicals it can be a bit cramped.  Also if I need sand I have to unload back section so could do with more space.

Im thinking of getting a vivaro,  traffic,  transit etc but what puts me off is that because I live in a rural area I do a lot of mileage as the norm so im not sure I can afford to loose fuel economy.  Combo does about 50-55 to the gallon so to drop to about 35 to the gallon would cost a fair bit in extra fuel each week.

If you could keep the combo i would, when i had a window cleaning round i had the 1.7 combo and a 2.0 transit, the mpg on the transit was half of the combo so its a big hit!

Best thing might be a box trailer for the days you need more space?

i had a mwb transit which never seemed big enough but i realised that whatever van i bought i would end up filling it so after a bit of research i bought an nv200 put a tow bar on it and bought a 6 x 4 box trailer which holds my pw gear gx 390, wheelie bin , hoses and tools etc plus about six bags of sand. my vans towing weight is 1100kg which is just about enough for my needs. i chose fuel economy over size which is what it comes down to really.
my van is full of my cc gear.

Buy what you need on a day to day basis!  Don't buy for the odd occasion!  Fit a tow bar and buy a small trailer or rent a van in for the days when you need a big van and charge the job for it.

I have just ordered a new transit custom but ideally there are occasions when we need an XLWB Hi Roof Mercedes Sprinter.  My philosophy was buy the Transit Custom, i already have a 7 metre box trailer which the transit will tow and if I need a big van I costed a Luton Body with a tail lift locally and they cost £80 a day to hire.  Saved me nearly £10K I will get better fuel economy and will never spend anything like the saving on hire.

I'd just get a bigger van. We have smaller vans and I use mainly the vivaro LWB but on occasion I've use the connect for pressure washing jobs and I hate it. Way to small.

Plus if you get a bigger van you could use a water tank.

I have looked into a trailer, problem is I have no where to keep it. Plus I only have a kiddy driving licence so can only drive a car, milk float and I think im allowed to ride a skateboard on the road with it too. So i'm quite restricted on the size of trailer.

I do need more space, would be nice to carry more stuff comfortably instead of unloading and loading van every morning and sometimes even having to return to base to reload half way through the day.  Plus when full i have to unload the majority of my van just to get gear that i need out for the job im on.

Most importantly im fed up of peeing into a bucket in the back of my van whilst on my knees!

Im not doing very well at convincing myself to keep my combo.

I got a MWB transit couple of months ago and im surprised how good it is on fuel, i normally take the van if i pop to the shops even if the cars there i cant see that much difference tbh.

Cost in a bit more for fuel on your job prices.

The issue you have is "No Matter How Big A Van Is It Will Never Be Big Enough"  So if you don't organise yourself you can't have it all ways.  We only load for the job what we require!  We manage on most jobs on a day to day basis with our Vivaro Crew Van LWB (Soon to become Transit Custom LWB DCIV) and I would guess your Combo has more room than both.  We then as previously posted add a Trailer if necessary and or Rent in a Really Big Van for massive jobs.

Yeah I know what your saying Kev. I carry hoses, tank, washer, rotary, lance, fuel cans, wellies waterproofs, brushes, shovel, bucket, towels and a few other bits like tools. Which I can fit in. I put in a shelf near the roof, so all that fills van.  But when I need stuff like knapsacks, hypo, hypo brush and bucket, oil remover then it just runs out of space.
I only carry what I need for the day, but more often than not these days I am needing to carry more stuff on a day to day basis.

Made the call and bought a bigger van.
