does anyone use any drain clearing chemicals, the type for use inside to unblock a sink / bath.

I Usually use a combination of plungers and wire for insides and the usual drain rods / jetter for outside but I had a bath today that would just not budge. I think it was a lot of hair and general gung down there but I think a lot further down the pipes that I could get to. I put some chemicals down and told them to leave it for a while to see if it cleared and told me to ring back if it hadn't cleared I was just seeing if anyone has a preferred chemical they use or if any are the best ones

Thanks yes I've had a look at them before and it's on the list to buy. I've got something similar now basicly just the wire from the inside without the motor so I do it by hand but it's only a few meters long so can only get to certain problems.

If it blocks up again I might have to disconnect the trap from the sink this time and try goin in from that way, there were a lot of people in the house and had a lot of hairs everywhere so I think it'll be clumps of hair stuck somewhere

I use drain acid from Staples - it works on the assumption the drain always flows down hill and the acid is heavier than water but it dilutes on the way if it ever gets to the blockage. What sort of plunger do you use ?

I may still have an old cable machine in the garage

ive got some drain acid I use for outsides the only problem with it is that it strips the chrome off the plugs so I cant use it inside. Ive got some other chemicals I use but im going to try and order a few different ones see which works best for high fats / greasy sinks or any other type of blockages.

for internal sinks / baths ive got the older fashioned type of plunger, I just hold a rag or bag over the over flow pipe and plunger, it usually works fine 90% of the time. Ive got a toilet auger and flexi spring wires for internal. External ive got the plastic lock fast rods, steel rods in two sizes and flexi coil spring rods all from wardflex.

Everytime I come across a different problem I try to buy the equipment / get the knowledge to unblock it easier next time

I rarely ever need acid and it is the very last resort. Acid builds heat and makes the plastic pipes sag. I use this type of plunger and PULL rather than push as that moves the block and not compresses it

Yes I tend not to that much I just carry it on the van incase I need it. I mostly use it when I do house cleans toget rid of the limescale in the toilets.

I'll have a look at ordering one of those types now. I was having a look earlier to see if there's any other types or smaller ones I can carry

I have a smaller hand cable tool that I can also use with a battery drill but you can't beat the excitement of kneeling in a puddle of festering sink waste holding a 240 volt drill and clearing the blockage - until you present the invoice

Ye I like doing drains more than anything else. It's a more enjoyable job I find and no one ever questions an invoice cuz they can't do it themselves

Sorry to hijack the thread, BDCS ive just been looking in to going on the drain jetting course and  drain surveyor course. Am i right in thinking you were self taught ? Im just wondering how hard the surveying is to get into.The bloke i spoke to said that there was people who had been doing drains for a while who were struggling with the course.What was your background when you got in to it and how hard did you find it?

BDCS ive managed to get hold of the Manchester department and he told me a total different story, he said he has people who are new to it all the time and they get through it fine. So im going to buy some books and book up for a couple of months from now.

No I've not been on a course for drain inspections I just did the water jetting course 

How come you getting you pa1 and 6 what you planning to do

Kill weeds   if i dont get the pa1/pa6 it will be just my luck some one will grass me in  .....  what was the drain jetting course like ? im doing that as well but they told me it doesn't start till next month
