Removing pointing from slabs
« on: June 11, 2014, 08:59:37 pm »
Doing my first pointing removal and re-point job! Anyone know the best way or a certain tool for doing this? I have angle grinders with diamond blades ect. The only way I can see is to grind out and clear with a bolster chisel. Anyone know a easier way?

I can usually get most of it out with a turbo without even trying  :o

A 4 inch grinder will take ages, hopefully you have bigger if not I would hire a stilsaw from a hire shop. cut a line right down the centre then break away each side with a bolster,

This is a crappy job, I had trouble finding a builder to do it last a year, I served my time as a bricklayer and there was no chance I would even touch the job.

DC 270 Exakt Saw fitted with  PTV Vac for extraction is the best option and fitted with a T60 Blade.

Done 1000's M2 of grout with them and Grout is a lot more difficult to remove than pointing!

The best tool is a stilhsaw   But you don't have one so use your Large grinder with your mate dribbling water onto the surface as you cut.

Or just have a hose pipe running, it's outside, so no need for vacuum, makes more mess but just wash it down after you've done

We do a lot of this work and use 4" grinder with mortor rake disc. Keep it wet and it will keep the dust down. I think a stihl saw is a bit over kill on this type of work and a lot harder to use.
