Yeh Hydroflouric, been using it for years for this type of brick cleaning removing carbon etc.

 Did you need to use a degreaser first before applying the Hydrflouric, we stopped doing jobs like this due to dangers of the chemical but always found it best to use a degreaser  first. The results look very good but i always found it an hassle espeacially if doing work from scaffolding, from a cherry picker it was much easier as you had more control over chemical getting on the actual surface of the wall and not on every bit of scaffold and board that you might touch

It's a nice job that Lee but after reading some of the replies I would not go near that stuff now.

Why wouldn't hydrochloric work in this instance? Due to the soot?
