Website Back to Basics
« on: April 22, 2014, 01:14:51 pm »
Hi I decided to simplify my website over the weekend.

remove all the flouncy bouncy graphics and go for a clean, to the point look.

what do you think?

I would have your phone number prominent on every page! Other than that, the website is good enough, as long as it is easy to find in local searches!

Do you get much work from the website at the moment Marc?

I can see quite a few ways to get it higher in google searches,...

Firstly - sign up for google adwords,... don't pay for ads, but use the "Keyword Planner" tool to see what ppl in your area are typing into Google & write up a list of keywords that suit your company.

Add geographic keywords to your list - the names of the towns/villages/areas you work in.

Use the keyword list to maximise your google exposure by putting relevant keywords in the page text, page titles, H tags, meta description tags, file names, image ALT tags etc etc etc - put the keywords everywhere. Never use the same tags or titles on more than one page, variety is essential. Never use the same keyword more than once every 150 words or you might get penalised for keyword stuffing.

Signup for google webmaster tools, verify your site & submit a sitemap,...

This will get you seen by Google,.. but that is only half the challenge.

Next you need to make the site appeal to the user.

Over half of all internet browsing is now done via mobile devices, so it is ESSENTIAL that you use a responsive layout otherwise you can loose up to half your potential clients. Responsive templates are available free for wordpress - but to be honest the free ones are rubbish, its worth paying the £45 for a pro one from www.templatemonster.com or www.themeforest.org

You need to have your contact numbers on every page, and adding a list of the areas you cover is usually a good idea too.

Using photos that show YOU, you cleaning windows, you standing next to your signwritten van, you cleaning gutters etc etc can double the amount of calls you get when compared with websites that only show photos of shiny windows or that use generic stock photos.

I'd also concentrate more on your services, less on the distractions,... currently you have a 6 page website and only 2 pages are about your services!!

The "Terms & Conditions" page is off putting - I wouldn't call you! I know you need T&C's,.. but I'd only introduce these after meeting, giving a price etc,.. doing it in person will mean you loose a lot less customers than putting it on the website.

I'd put that page on a small link in the page footer with a privacy policy (Good for Google ranking) and a cookie policy (EU law now requires one!) - and I'd replace it with a conservatory cleaning page maybe,...

A standard 6 - 7 page site would set you back £400,... I'd hope it'd earn that back for you very quickly though.  ;)

Yep - I build with Wordpress these days, so you can easily make changes yourself. ;)
