Anyone seen damage like this before ?
« on: March 26, 2014, 03:41:50 pm »

As I said in another post, one of my vac motors blew on Friday eve while on a job, ordered one off e bay. Said it was Lamb Ametek, 1400w etc etc, looked ok in the pics and had Italy on the sticker, so thought all would be well, fitted it into the machine this morn, and thought I would run it for a bit prior to connecting pipes etc, sounded like a bag of nails and pretty much instantly started billowing smoke out, so shut it off and took it out, checked the base and it looks like , well it has, sucked the base up and made contact with the fins, very thin metal, just got back from a 90 mile round trip to Woodbridge in Harlow to get another one.
Trying to get the company who I bought it off too communicate with me at the moment.

Mark

I bought one of those a while back, put it in my machine and tested it, sparks flying everywhere and then it blew out and looked exactly like your picture.

I called up and they replaced it but the exact same thing happened with the next one so in the end they refunded my money.

Good customer service, crap vac.

Is there any chance you over tightened the bolts when fitting to manifold ?

You can not buy a decent vacuum motor for that price and certainly not a genuine Lamb Ametek.

Overtightening can also cause this damage. The vacuum motor just needs tightening so it is in close proximity with the opening or manifold. It does not need to be screwed down tight.

John no ,chance, I have rubber grommets over the threaded bar, then a washer and a lock nut, nuts were finger tight, believe I have fitted plenty of motors in the past and have never seen damage like this before.
Neither had the guy's at Woodbridge, new motor from them is running perfect, ran it for half hour, without loading, then connected everything up.

Cheers Tony, I will use that as backup if there is a prob with them.

The Ebay ad is misleading as it states "Lamb Ametek" but in description says "Lamb Ametek compatable".

Yes, it is misleading, also the one in the pic has Italy on the sticker, this one doesn't.

Have grounds for a case, but will give them the benefit of the doubt as far as getting my money back goes, have a contact number now also.

Iv had similar motors but the version with the hose connector ...     The numbering system looks the same  ,  check for a smudged black stamp on the upper side of the motor , mine does say Ametek .   They do have plants in Italy and eastern europe .

Yep i bought one of these a while back for my grace and it completely dented the face in and made contact with the fins on the fan.

had to  take it out and discard, seems like the metal casing is just too flimsy !

didnt bother sending it back but just put it down to experience, but really not fit for purpose and shouldnt be sold

The reason I got this one, was because I  didn't get in till late on the Friday, so ordered it on line, know that they would probably dispatch on Sat and it would be here hopefully on the Monday.
Will bell them tomorrow and see what they say, have not left feedback yet.

Just to let you know Steve, I did send the vac motor back, not sure why you would let £64 slip like that, watch the pennies and the pounds look after themselves.
They sent me a postage label and I posted it off on Friday, money was back in my account by Tuesday  ;D

Well done, glad you got your money back,  yeah you're right I should've sent it back, just didnt want them to send me another one, and in my experience suppliers are very reluctant normally to replace them once they been fitted, so i just bought another from craftex.

never seen a motor cave in like that before though  :o

Neither had the guys at Woodbridge and neither have I and I have got through quite a few in the 10 years I have been going  ;D
I suppose I had not left them feedback, maybe why I got the refund so quickly, as negative feedback can really do some damage
