Whilst some foreign aid is questionable I believe that the Syrian people need as much help as they can get. Homs is "devastated". And it's just one city - the entire country is like this and worse. There are no medical supplies and little food.

This is interesting - it shows donations to Syria as a % of GDP: http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/interactive/2013/sep/06/syria-aid-who-gives-how-much £600m = .00004775.4% of our GDP. Luxembourg gives more to the Syrians on this measure.

On another matter, have you been to Pakistan DannyMack? I have. Indeed I have spent months there travelling all over the country. I often tell people of my experiences there, which were all good. Nowhere, ironically except Syria - where I've also spent months - will you find a warmer more welcoming people. In many restaurants I was told NOT to pay as I was a guest in their country. It was embarrassing given all the "Paki bashing" that goes on here. By the way it was Pakistan in which Bin Laden (not Larden...) was found, not India (a country in which I've spent years also).

Seems you have quite a right wing view of life if you are happy to see people steralised to keep a population down; perhaps you think the mentally ill should be euthanased? Or it's OK to perform medical experiments on gypsys and Jews? If you took time to look at the reasons why people in developing countries have so many children it's because many of their kids die before adulthood, a lack of education (hopefully aid will help there) and because they don't have the luxury of the benefits system to support them when they get ill or old as we have here, which is my link back to the original thread.

Well all I can see if I ran this Country if have all the able people on Benefits who can work that are just lazy so & so's I'd have them signing on at 5am then off to clean the streets bloody ponces. Working tax credit and child tax credit , Why should people who have kids be given handouts when a young married couple who dont have kids and are on low income get nowt .

But she also used to work long hours 7 days a week at times  while a family member took care of us .

The streets and parks are full of litter because of council cutbacks.
At the end of the day if you force people on the dole to clean them then you have to pay
minimum wage that's the law.
So what your saying is you want your council tax raised to cover this, I think not.
At the end of the day if all benefits where axed tomorrow your taxes wouldn't go down one penny
the extra would just be wasted or redistributed among the rich.

I agree with all on this benefit grabbing. But we need to clean up all this zero hour contracts  as they are just away around employment commitments. Close down all the temp companies and let companies employ and commit to workers a job they on depend on. In many countries if a company wanted a position filled more that 27 days continually that person doing the work would be permanent. This temp work is just there to circumvent the law and commitment to workers.
The force all companies that make money in the U K to pay tax in the U K. This would stop all the tax dodges were have so many in the U K. There are hardly any big companies in the country. Do some research you will be shocked . Mr Green of Debentures paid his a wife a tax free dividend of billions because she resides in Monaco. Our Poor Mr Mitchell of the the pleb story pays not tax on his investments in the U K as its a Caymone Island registered company and so does the Minister of transport. Sainsburys is an other.
      Asda in my town has just installed a bank of self help tills for check out  by customer with  large trolleys guess were all those workers will be soon, also in the doll ques. There will soon be not workers on the check outs mark my. Create unemployment and then don`t  pay tax in the U K either. We ll need to put out foot down on our local politicians.
         Our Local hos-pis need to open a new wing our local P M Maria Miller wanted £1800. to do the job. What does she get a salary for. Her only concern was were the press was.

We all have a view or perception of how things are or should be .

First thing our Goverment like other Goverments do not use the money in their control properly which is why despite us being an apparent rich country their is still people living on the streets and people living in real poverty .

India  gets foreign aid  but cant address the appalling poverty in their country but can afford to spend £1 billion on a space program   .

As for Polish etc pinching our jobs they are here as economic migrants and they do the jobs that some of us native English wont do so power to them they have a great work ethic .

Which is something that is lost on a lot of people in this country their is plenty of people on benefits who have never worked at all or very little in years and think they are owed something .

And are apparently skint and cant afford a decent meal or heating but still manage to smoke and drink everyday .

A lot of money the Goverment dishes out goes to the wrong people and places and those that really need and deserve it are left to suffer .

Other Goverments seem to run their countries in a business like way which is why they appear not to be the poope so much as us if this approach was taken and mastered many years ago by our goverment maybe we would not be running this post for 4 pages and beyond . Mike
