hypo and water equation
« on: February 05, 2014, 02:10:50 pm »
hi

does anyone know the equation for sodium hypochlorite and water?

wikapedia says:
When dissolved in water it will slowly decompose, releasing chlorine, oxygen and sodium and hydroxide ions.
4 NaClO + 2 H2O → 4 Na+ + 4 OH− + 2 Cl2 + O2

another equation that balances could be

NaClO + H2O → NaCl + H202    or salt and hydrogen peroxide

does anyone know which one is true or if it produces another equation

thanks
Ashley

I can't say I've ever really needed to know the answer - I bet Chris's mate in his shed would know the answer and why  ;D

I don't know about the equation but cold temp affects the strength.

The answer is bound to have some reflection on the temperature and porosity of the substrate - sorry that was deemed by those who don't know the answer to be a trick question. What type of tiles were they ?  ???

Thanks

I would not mention it in your risk assessment .I think most will take a dim view of emptying 15% hypochlorite into the water course.
