Paying a canvasser - how much?
« on: January 23, 2014, 04:50:09 pm »
OK peeps.

Time to start really building the round up so I'm going to get a canvasser on board.  My plan is to get someone from the local Uni to come out with me on Mondays and knock round the adjoining houses of the ones I clean.  That way I can keep the round reasonably compact and we have an opening line of "we're cleaning your neighbours"

I think it would be better to pay on the basis of results (but feel free to let me have your thoughts) so what is the going rate please?  Also, should I pay half on receipt of the lead/first clean and half after 2/3 cleans? or all upfront?

Should I get a professional canvasser in?

Cheers in advance, Tom

I would pay them an hourly rate, and then a bonus for each customer gained on a part time basis.

You have to offer a decent package to motivate someone, because it is not the easiest job in the world.

Also I would offer a trial period to see if they were suited for the job.

Can't see many waiting for the other half payment, for you to do 2 or 3 cleans to be honest.

The going rate for a professional canvasser is 2x the monthly amount, I don't think I know of anyone professional that charges different.

You maybe able to get someone to do it cheaper, or paid hourly, such as the example of a guy from the local uni, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they will get compact work. If the guy isn't used to canvassing the chances are the work will not be compact as he'll miss opportunities to close the deal on the door and hence get less work that's spread about a bit.

You may drop lucky and find someone who is a natural on the door, but they'll have to be familiar with pricing, etc.

If you can get a confident guy though, be willing to train them up to price right and they're willing to work part time you could do well, though I doubt many would consider waiting for half of the payment 2-3 cleans down the line. I would also doubt offering one day per week would attract the person you're looking for.
Where am I knocking today?

Tell the person your taking on your paying one clean value and he has to work a week in advance, ie he gets paid after 2 weeks . This is normal for a proper job. This way they will stay longer and you get a chance to clean the work.

The first week you need to go out with him or he wont even last 3 days on his own, I believe when training someone to knock its important they see a deal made to get the belief that its possible.

On the first night they only watch you, you get all the deals and just say what we get tonight is your training wages, if they are up for a little knock later on let them have an hour on there own, don't hover round him he'll crumble.

Next night you both go out together let him loose but stay in ear shot maybe jump in where necessary.

Be aware though no matter how good they may appear or how desperate they seem for money the average life span for door knockers is 21 days, Ive found in past a couple of part timers is more effective than 1 full timer due to enthusiasm levels.

Hope this helps

Only pay for results - hourly wage won't work even if you're with them..

I spent 9 months canvassing for a windy company and tbh some days I couldn't be arsed. On an hourly rate you're still paying me to ream off excuses as to why I didn't sell'.

I was only paid 1 x and had to hand it back if cancelled before 2 cleans (boss was paying 50% to subbys).

But hey I was working full time for the muppet and in the end earnt quite reasonable from him.

Good luck
