Lady wants me to treat and clean her carpet after damp had caused browning on the tips of a big patch of the fibres.  Now I know this is caused by the natural stain wicking up from the hessian/jute backing etc.  Thing is,  she was pretty sure the carpet is wool or a wool mixed with other fibre so I did a burn test on a few fibres and each one neither smelled of hair or turned to Ash.  It melted back slowly,  flamed,  no smoke and floated in water. Seeming like polyprop? 

Do they use a hessian backing on poly? 
If it is poly would it be best to use the natural fibre rinse to finish with  to try and stop any further browning?

I would try an application of Prochem browning prescription.

We Treated a browning stain we caused after a client put a  blanket  on the damp carpet over night so the kids could sit In front of the tv (the carpet was still damp the next day)

Cheers Mike yeah I've bought some chemspek browning stuff to treat the actual browning but I'm more worried about further browning happening after I've done the job as I'm not entirely sure what the fibres are made from, the burn test points to polyprop in my beginners carpet fibre identification but what would you think from what I described?  The burned fibres melted back and into a hard Black ball each time,  surely is got to be a 100% poly or other synthetic?  And would you treat it with a fibre rinse because of the hessian backing?

Sound very much polypropylene you could try Mick's method you will need a dwell time.

Your solution should'nt penetrate to the backing anyhow, perhaps a lower psi and forced drying to be sure.

Lots of avenues to try, depending if the carpet actually needs cleaning or it's just about correcting the browning.

 Perhaps clean it with a neutral prespray and acid rinse or  even  dynamall which I believe can bu used to correct browning

Another is a fibre shampoo /oxibrite/fibrebuff  mix

If it is polyprop - it should come out with a normal clean.

Browning isn't always caused by dye from a backing. It can just happen because the item got wet. Just like when you get a brown stain on a ceiling. These brown stains on ceilings are extremely difficult to deal with. If you just paint over with emulsion it will come back through even though it is totally dry. You have to put a stain blocker coat on first.
Unfortunately these type of water stains are sometimes very hard to remove from carpets and fabrics.
In your instance I would just try a normal clean to start with and if thats not sufficient then dry browning treatment. If it has browned because it was wet for an extended length of time then it may be permanent.

In the original post it was said that the carpet browned after being damp....is the property prone to dampness, then if so it may be a reoccurring problem.. plus have you looked underneath the carpet to check out what is going on beneath...for example 'mildew'

it was due to when the floods were happening and the ground got damp and came up through the bad flooring underneath. It was laid in the 70's but not done very well. She had the carpet removed recently after the damp issues and had the floor sealed and a membrane put down and carpet relaid. So the damp issue shouldn't reoccur . I made sure of all this when I spoke to her about the job

If its polyprop i would give it a clean first there's a good chance it may just wash out.
