Carl without hi-jacking this thread to much , floods are abating at the moment, back fields are going down very quickly, but coming out somewhere else I guess, roads are beginning to be pumped clear so home -owners can get back into their properties to start clean up. Hopefully we have got away without being flooded, but let me tell you watching the flood water move closer to your house at 10-15 metres per hour is no fun.

I am glad you asked because I have been trying to get hold of Francois as well.

I was going over my course notes last night in bed and have to admit after reading them through several times since the course that I am now I am beginning to understand the development and growth theories better!   Anyway it occurred to me that given that some algae becomes parasitic and by definition a heterotroph it got me thinking that this type of algae would bloom and develop faster after something like a housefire because it thrives on carbon?  What do you think?

Most things on this planet are heterotrophic....and i understand what you are saying ,it seems plausable. Given that mosses/algae grow were the conditions are idea ie damp/shaded areas.You would take it that it would follow suit...ie a higher Carbon content.
Saying that tho' We should have rainforests at the side of the motorways.
What we do have is the biologist Dr Pamela E Simpson...we shall ask her...when we recover the missing Frenchman
