Roof vent.
We are fitting a Broan roof vent tomorrow weather permitting.
A couple of questions I would like help with please.
1. The vent has a flap inside to prevent air currents blowing back into the gas heater when the unit is off. Did you guys leave it in place?
2. The vent comes with a 'screw in flange.' Once that was screwed in, did you fill the cavity around with heat resistant silicone or did you not bother?
Thanks

Hi Spruce, I removed the flap then fitted the vent over the hole in the van roof sealed with silkaflex I think it was called or similar. It was a marine mastic come sealer I used and pop riveted through the screw holes. Kept the mesh on the vent mouth.
Had no problems with it at all, bit scary going through the roof and roof lining but worth it for me.
I didn't fill the cavity only under the contact area of the baseplate.

Spruce, I had one if these on my old van, like Dave I removed the flap, I bought some high temp sealant from screw fix and just bonded it to the roof, that way it made sure it was water tight.

Thanks guys. We got some stuff from screwfix that withstands heat. Its call Geocel Plumba Flu Silicone so its probably the same stuff. The screen fell out in the box so I'll put that back. I just didn't know if you left the flap in or not.
So thanks, I will remove the flap.
I was going to drill some more holes in the mounting plate and pop rivit it to the roof with sealer between. I was going to put a small washer between the plate and roof with the rivits through it so there is a slight gap between the roof and the plate for the sealer to work.
Thanks again
