Just wondering if the hiace d4d is as thirsty as some say.

It's a 2008 model I'm looking at, 2.5 litre, the 95 bhp one. Engines look solid as a rock, so to be honest a bit more fuel spend is ok if you get the reliability. Road tax is a bit hefty too, but same principle goes.

Think I've see a few here run hiaces with WFP systems in? Do you find the fuel bill is too hefty and would it put you off buying another?

I remember top gear did a test, they had a Prius Eco car driven round the track as a fast as it could possibly go,(slow as a snail in quick sand) then they had a BMW m3 just sat behind it on its tail.

Because the Prius was being thrashed, and the m3 was just sitting comfortable, the Prius actually had worse economy.

Everything is relative.

I remember seeing you had a hiace Dave. What size tank you got in yours?

Most vehicles are much the same economy wise and vary depending on how you drive them. I googled the Hiace for reliability faults and found next to nothing. Googled fuel economy and they came out well. Mine hasn't been very reliable so far - it blew a tail light bulb last year - cost me over 70p!

My road tax is really low. Something to do with the particular year mine came out.

I used to have a swb high roof iveco daily, i got 30mpg out of that, which wasnt bad at all for a van of that size and weight. The hiace is a lot lighter and more aerodynamic, so i would imagine, driven sensibly, you should get 35+mpg.

Never check mine to be honest. local Garage reckons they are superb as far as reliability goes, they are a bit agricultural compared to a VW or even a Vivaro but excellent work horse. I'd buy another or maybe the Hyundai

Son used to drive a five cylinder VW - fast as anything but the engine was shot at 70k 3 years old - unbelievable pile of crap! Garage wanted £9000 to put it right!!!!!!!!!
Customer has a Transit - the rings were gone around 75k and the injectors. Friend has a vivaro - gearbox gone.

Get good and bad in all vans I suppose.

I have a hiace, yes it uses a bit of fuel generally get 40 miles to every £10 of desiel but when you look at the other costs it worth it. No garage bills whatsoever , no cost at mot time, mine has no rust on body or underneath, I have also had the dreaded light bulb go a few years ago .

I use 2 Hiaces, yes, they are heavier on fuel but running costs are cheaper.

I get a return of 28 - 30 mpg. But it never breaks down.

I have an 03 that was fitted with a tank from new, its had 1 clutch then an annual service. Its looking tired but its still out 5 days a week.

I'm running 2 Hiace's and previous van was also a Hiace. I get about 140 miles to £40. Alot of my work is very condensed the 10 plate, same engine as the one your looking at is more economical that the the W reg, that's non turbo. They just keep going!

The old Van after running it for 8 years, all I ever replaced was rear light bulb & and the Diff, the van was abused, eventually sold it for export to the Congo

bottom roller for side door ( keep it well greased)

 have had hiace for the last 2 years ,
goes like a bomb , reliable and has not broken down yet.
only replaced the cat converter , and the springs on the back , only because of the weight it carries but also its a 97 model .
best van i have owned so far with no major issues

Got to phone the dealer with a decision. I'm pretty certain it's a yes though. Need to get a bit more info on it.

I think it only has partial service history, but I'll probably just put it through a big service when I get it. Cam belt etc. They seem not too expensive to replace?

It's got 100,000 miles on the clock but I only do 8,000 miles a year so the high mileage doesn't worry me. It's not got a mark on it inside or out, silver with a rhino roof rack already on.

Still about the £5000 mark mind but it looks solid.
