Decided to have another cull
« on: December 11, 2013, 03:41:20 pm »
I'm too nice for my own good. You know the scenario - you get approached by someone who asks the classic "How much do you charge". You explain it depends and ask to look at the house. It's right across the road where you are working and you have 4 05 there too, so you pop over and as you open the side gate you are forced to clamber over the mattress and old fridge down the side of the house your business head is screaming "Don't take him on!!!!".

But you do because you are always looking to build and anyway you can't think of a reason that he'll accept. "You're a minger and you probably won't pay me after 2 cleans" ain't gonna cut it. Have you got a cheque book "No" - another strike. Anyway like a divvy you take him on.

And here I am. First clean done and paid for - check. Second  clean - "I'll post the money on" and I'm still waiting weeks later.

So, once again i've had enough and am having a cull. I've let 3 or 4 go and feel better for it.

It's got to be done Carl!

Off to the dentists here ... I got shot of a PITA about an hour ago ... I'll tell you about it when I get back.
It's a game of three halves!

I'm doing exactly the same at the moment, going through my debt book and it's the same old twats every time at the end of the month that I'm chasing up the money. So I've deleted all the bad'uns from the round and will be out canvassing in Jan for my next lot of time wasters  ;D

I sent a red letter today to a custie who owes me for 2 cleans on 2 properties - total £46.
Went to collect, as I was passing, a while back and rang bell. No answer. Look thru window and there she is sat watching telly. Knock on window and she comes to the door. She says her hubby has gone bankrupt (but she still let me clean the properties the 2nd time before telling me  >:( What is it with some people?) but that he'll pop the money in to me as he's working up my way (apparently you can continue as long as you tell people that you are bankrupt before you start the job  ???).

A fortnight later I'm still waiting, so out goes the red letter. I'll follow that up with Thos Higgins if it doesn't work.

Mind you just chased a late payer and she's coughed up on PayPal! Sent me a message "Can I leave next clean till Feb". Too late, your dumped love!

So back from the dentist's. .. due a crown in the new year sob sob. Hey ho and back to the story.

Last time I did this custy (see my "give 'em an inch" thread from middle of October) I almost dumped them but here's the scenario.

Elderly couple in a semi on the busy A4 "Portway" linking the M5 to Bristol. She sits in the bay and way back she asked me to blade off the windows on the bay she sits in. (I know I know)

So we go there today in the afternoon low sun; and she's sat there, he comes out to open the side gate. Dan does the backs I do the fronts. So she's still sat there and I finish the pole and "he" comes out and is looking at the downstairs windows at the front as I pass time of day and blade the front lower bay.

She actually stands at each pane of the bay as I blade it off and even scrim the edges and I turn to him and say "All done".

Him: "S'pose you want some money"
Me: "I do indeed, please."

She comes to the door.

Her: "Have you done the bay?"
Me: "Yes! You saw me do it!"
Her: "I'm just making sure."
Me: "You were stood there looking right at me, you know I did."
Her: "Well I'm watching you to make sure."
Me:(Incredulous) I've been cleaning here for over three years, don't you trust me?"

Her: (sidestepping my question) "They didn't stay clean very long last time."
Me: "Howd'you mean?"
Her: "Well they were dirty again within a couple of weeks."
Me: "Well, that's the traffic! How can that be my fault? Anyway your husband asked me to leave it 'til after Xmas last time remember? How filthy would they be if I'd agreed to that?"

Her: "Well, here's your money."
Me: "Thank you and have a good day." (Walk off shaking head, put stuff away and think blow this for a game of soldiers and walk back and ring bell)

Him: (Coming out of side gate) "Yes?"
Me: "I feel like you don't trust me ..."
Her: (Answering door) "Well ... "
Him: "You'll have to ask the boss."
Me: "I'm not happy; look just go and find another window cleaner I'm not working where I'm not trusted."

And that was that!

Good story!

I've just had a phone call off one of the ones I've dumped (but he doesn't know it yet. In fact he won't know till next year...) - the one with the mattress and fridge down by the side of the house).
Him - "Ah, glad you called me, I'd like totally forgot to send you the window cleaning money".

Me - "No worries. Could you send it in the post? Thanks"

"Yeah, no problem. Can you leave it till February. In fact i'll give you a call."

"Sure. No problem" Yeah, as if mate lol

"It's just that we've got Christmas coming and we've just got a dog. He's a NIGHTMARE!".

"Sure. No problem" me says.

So if he sends the money i'll be happy, plus he'll have to deal with the dirty paw print patio doors (or not if my suspicions are right  :( )and I won't have to deal with the inevitable dog pooe.

Everyone's a winner!

GOLD i have a few custies that come out with comments like you ve pointed out.ive been cleaning some of em for years and years and still they seem to distrust me for some reason.

i dont let it worry me though.sounds like your being a bit hyper sensitive.

then on the other hand if you dont like their attitude to you then you can choose to dump the job!

i think its deeply ingrained in some people to never trust a window cleaner.quite a few just see it as a bummers job! ::)roll ;D
price higher/work harder!

I've had enough of the buy now pay never brigade. I've recently been calling them of an evening as a gentle reminder. Still there's some that the reminder has obviously fallen on deaf as well as ignorant ears. It's a joke why should i have to call someone twice as well as a calling card with 'payment terms 14 days' written on it. Today i started saying to the online payees that new calling cards will be in Jan stating a £5 added to their bill if not made within the 14 days. Why should i have to put up with their bull 'oh i've got the pc on i'll do it now' yeah yeah we've heard it all before luv. Biggest wind up of the lot.  >:(

You need to tell them what will happen if late payment.I charge them a admin fee of 2 quid for after 10 days and after 30 days five quid a month.I had one not paid for a few months it cost her 70 quid plus costs. Its in my terms and my solicitor said it fare. When they saw I meant business they paid up.All that for a 20 quid bill.
