Truckmount fuel pump
« on: November 21, 2013, 11:57:34 am »
Anyone know where I can get one for a Spitfire 4.0?

My TM keeps cutting out, think it could be that.. maybe :-\

I guess it's quite generic?

I thought that too, put a new one on, even re-newed some fuel lines,

It drives me round the twist, I crank up the TM, get to the wand up two flight of stairs and it cuts out, does it when it's cool to so not overheating.

Wait 5 mins and it starts then.

Have you checked the float switch in the recovery tank, the one that stops the machine when it is full? Wiring to it too. Also the oil pressure switch and wiring.
Just a thought.

I unplugged the float in the waste tank. left unplugged.

The oil switch I discounted that too still happened, so reconnected.

I also disscounted to very bottom float in the header tanks, left unconnected because I'm not sure where/how it was connected now.

Changed the heat sensor,

As you can see it's been a long time problem, sometimes its ok for a few weeks.

Fuel pump is about the last thing to try.

Yes, outer now gone, (thought that fixed it but was just coincidence that I had a good run without cut outs)

Other day I removed the top metal cover and still cut out with it removed.

If the fuel line is connected with a quick connect check that. I had a similar thing and it turned out the connector wasn't sealing properly anymore and letting air in.
Hope you fix it, it drove me mad for a couple of days having to walk out to van to restart, before I worked it out.

Yeah I chucked that fuel line QD and just ran straight new fuel line, I think there was a slight improvement after that.

Does no one think it could be the pump? where can I get one if they are cheap enough  its worth a try.

Where are you based I have a spare pump that you could try just to rule the pump out.

On our spitfire 3.2 we are able to bypass all the sensors I don't know whether its the same on the spitfire 4.

I had a problem with my fuel pump on my TM last year, and rather than buy the expensive one supplied I got this one which has been perfect: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251049348528&ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:GB:1123

I initially tried replacing it with a manual pump (as opposed to electric) which relies on vacuum - but the vacuum wasn't strong enough - although this can be done by simply modifying/replacing the carb/inlet to run a feed off of it. That would definitely work 100%, but it is a bit of a pain in the bum to do!

Raymondo many thanks for the offer, I just bought the pump Kevin linked to, for £25 it's worth a try.

Simon, I never thought of coil packs, not sure where they're too, but I have the manual Ill look into that if this doesn't do it.

could it be the divert valve sticking ?

my max use to do this , when it got to hot the valve didn't open so it wouldn't dump water in the recovery tank so in turn it was over heating then shuting itself down was fine when using normal stop to deal with a stain after 5mins it would die

Craig,
If it is a Briggs & Stratton Vanguard then there are two magnetos that lead to the spark plugs, (obviously) and are behind the front engine cover. They should have a certain gap to the flywheel, the gap could be wrong or one of the magnetos is damaged or isn't working properly. Worth a try and they aren't much to replace.

It’s easy to test the pump all what’s needed is glass jar or similar. ???

I don’t know your machine but me being a lazy person that I am; I keep forgetting to clean out the orifice hot or cold.

Good luck please let us know how you get on

Craig
on the 4.0 there is a cut out that is powered by all of the safety cut outs and it is just one wire, if you disconnect it when it will not start up again and it starts with that disconnected, then you will then have to disconnect all the cut outs one by one to find out which one it is that is causing the problem. The float switches and relays are a pain on the 4.0.
A fuel pump you can buy from anywhere as the carbs ultimately decide the amount of fuel it will take but get something from a small car if you are going to use a breaker.
The main safety cut out is a small plug on the right hand side of the engine at the front of the starter motor if I remember correctly.
Give me a call if you think I can offer any advice, it is some time since I had a 4.0 but did get to know it quite well.

Cut out today, when I restarted I noticed an arc from the HT lead to the cylinder head, I have order the rubber boot thing, L shaped  thing that goes over the HT plug, as I think the arc came out of there.

But would that cause cut outs? would it just go lumpy?

Not sure if this is the real problem.  :-\

Thanks Peter, may call soon after I tried these things.
