Troublesome new leaded windows!
« on: November 20, 2013, 05:49:36 pm »
What's been your experience with these blighters.

I'm referring to those new leaded windows that, for some reason, have used a lead that dissolves, to some degree, so that no matter how many time you rinse, thay always dry spotted. It's definitely a result of the leads deliquescence because absolutely no spotting occurs just down from the top frame.

Do they eventually stop contaminating the water?

Has the lead bypassed a sealing process?

Have you found a solution?

I've had a short spell trying to resolve the problem in the past, to no avail, and now one of my customers has just gone and replaced the front of there property with the offending windows.  :(

Do quantum mechanics fix old transits?

And let us not forget, voyeurism is an occupational hazard that we simply must endure.

Yeah usually stops after 6 months, its the oxidising process.

usually a sign of cheap windows  ;)

When they have stopped you may be left some white marks or lead runs.

Either spray this on your brush or even better add to a trolley

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isopropyl_alcohol

This will give the lead ONE HELL OF A SHINE, but also get rid of any nasty white lead marks.

Dont be tempted to use any form of chemicals just yet ;)

Mr Pure, that sounds promising! Have you had cause to use it for this reason then?

I had a whole street of houses where this was happening & I was left with runs coming down off the horizontal lead strips.

A bit of extra scrubbing to get them shifted in the first place & a higher flow rate seems to be keeping them in check.  ;)

Best of luck
Paul

When they stop spotting, the lead will start to lift and come off.
Quality products.

I was just thinking chaps, surely a heavy rainfall is going to create the same problem, wouldn't you say?

The lead needs to oxidise. Once it's done that it won't happen. Usually takes 6 months.
