weigh bridge
« on: November 17, 2013, 08:19:11 am »
Hi

Unfortunately I got pulled over on the A1 north near boston spa .weatherby .

Weighed my vehicle  back axle  was 1250  just under
Front axle I was 1350 - again under

BUT add them together and I was 2600kg , and my gross vehicle weight is 2450 kg

I have a 650kg pure freedom system fitted , 2 man system , and I had a fair few poles in , 2xreels , but not much extra equipment .
I had a item off ebay for my son that was 30kg , but doesn't make much difference

2450 - gross vehicle weight
3500 - towing
1400 - front axle
1400 - rear axle

But the top figure is what it's all about .

I played dumb , very easy to do , stated that I thought it was 1400kg , less everything such as my 650 litres , me , fuel and bits and bats

£150 spot fine for being 10% over
£1500 fine in court if 30% over

However the police were very good to me , polite and helpful .
We dumped 250 litres of water. , and away I went .

Ford transit 260 04 plate . Baby one . Mwb low roof .

Now bought a T300 , ford transit which I get Monday .

They say you can go and weigh your vehicle , and if over your ok but must act on it .

Been past this place for about 4 years in this van , 3 or 4 times a month .

Oh well - I was due a newer better van - keeping it for 10years .

Do like my transits .

Sounds like you were lucky there kempy, glad it wasn't more serious. I got my connect weighed which has a higher payload that your transit and I was 250kg over. I think the minimum payload for a 650L tank is 1100kg, you will be fine with the t300, I got myself a t330 a few months ago after finding out my connect was overweight.

I got pulled a few months ago and was over by 40kg so i emptied some water and was overly appologetic to them and they let me go without further question.

I bet there's lots of WFP vans over the limit. Well done on doing something about it. You couldn't risk getting caught again.

I have a vollswagon caddy 1.9tdi 104 bhp

Gross weight 2210kg
Maximum payload 724kg

The maximum I carry;

400 litres of water  - 400kg
Driver and passenger - 160kg
Roof rack and ladders say- 50kg
30 litres of fuel- 30kg

Then I'm left with about 80kg for carbon poles, hose reel, leisure battery, bucket and squeegees etc.

In theory I should be ok. It would be first thing in a morning where I'm close. By late morning I've used a good 150kg of water.

Oy one way to be sure though and that's to put yourself on a Weigh bridge. Doesn't cost too much and you don't get fined etc.

Anyone with a payload of 700kg or less that carrys more than 400 litres of water you can guarantee your not legal at least early in the day.

In an Accident.....it would void our insurance as more weight means longer stopping distances etc. It's something we all have to think about and decide on.

I'm going to try get to a weigh bridge soon to make sure I'm under weight. Mayb I should go on a diet first too.

Just been having a look at payloads and according to Parker's the old transit would have been around 890-910kg payload is that correct?

Depends on the transit and the year. Some have more than that.
I have an 06 t260, worked it out to around 988

Why don't you have a quick google before making stupid comments?

Suprised they agreed to install a system that would take the vehicle over the weight.  Did they not advise you of this when you got it?

I'd be pretty annoyed at them if I was you.

I thought with the VW they also allowed a certain amount for the driver and fuel when calculating the payload, unlike most manufacturers where it all forms a part of the payload.

Thing is Lee there have been quite a few people who have pointed this out to you in the past but better late than never to take action.

That's interesting dd.

I need to look into that! Even better if it's true.

Yes I was annoyed with pure freedom ,
Do they have a weigh facility - they probably just go on some internet figures from one van to another .
I'm cool with it ,  I needed a better van , was going to do it in 12 months time , but done it now .
Hope insurance isn't too much more on a T300 - better fuel efficiency than my older 260.

I was polite , played dumb and got away with it . Happens again I'd be penalised .

Just a hassle of re-routing the van system etc .
Swapping it over - shouldn't be too difficult .

What about your water tank?
Is it made of fresh air?
That's another 25-30kg.  ;)

I do not think Pure Freedom are quite as good as some make out. They fitted an Isothermal I diesel heater in my van and despite this taking it over the payload limit (my van was just on limit already according to weighbridge) this formed no part of the discussion they had with me. I just have to be careful now not to fill tank right up.

I do not think they are a bad company but they are certainly not as professional as some think. Their 650l upright system is not safe (too top heavy) and can overload the front axle when tight against bulkhead.

Also I do not rate their diesel heater.

It is because the lwb is a heavier van so that take up some of the gross weight therefore reducing the payload

quick way to ruin your van suspension is to ride around with a heavy load each day

Good call.

Carry bigger items but less weight, makes more sense getting a 280 or 300

I had my van weighed and with everything in it I was 185
Kg clear. But if I had a passenger and a few more bits. Boom. Fine
