Inkjet ink on cream wool mix
« on: November 06, 2013, 12:01:43 pm »
Black too  :o

I was going to start by just flushing it. Any Prochem stain removers that will be good here?

Cheers

I would suggest you do some training before you dilute the stain and make it a lot bigger and worse than it is now.
Inkjet ink is very concentrated and economical.
I have been to a few stains that have other so called carpet cleaners have made a lot worse than before they arrived and have just walked from the job because they have been unable to improve on it.  The amount of moisture needs to be kept to the minimum until you have removed the  majority of the ink.
Isopropanol is the most effective dilutant for the most inks.
With a wool you may find the need to residue of the pigment.
You seriously need to consider some professional training if you are going to be charging people for professional services.

Fair point Peter. I think I might turn the job down on this basis - don't want to make things worse.

You don't have to attack the full stain just try and remove a small splash, dab it with a damp cloth. See if you have any transfer or be technical and lay the cloth across it and tamp it with your tamping brush.

Don't pass on it you could learn a lot without making things worse and whats the worst that could happen you have to tell the customer you failed

Mike

I was just concerned by Peter's point about it being very concentrated and that if I used a hand tool I could end up spreading the stain.

However, if it's water based and you just kept on flushing would you not get there in the end?

Peter makes a fair point but nothing wrong with trying to flush a small inconspicuous area.

I found on some inks you can flush 90% of it out but then you are left with a 10% that refuses to budge! almost like you are flushing out the carrier of the pigment and then you are left with the basic concentrate.

To be honest I've never had a problem with spreading ink on carpets, I have on fabrics but I just start and any problems I stop.

I would always flush it first. What are the chances custy has already had a go at it with something ( just don't stop until no more comes out).

Most come out without solvent, they are mainly water based. Ultrapac is good for black ink.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

Well, it didn't work but no additional harm done. As soon as I arrived the bloke said I could do what I wanted as it was beyond hope. The results were:

Flushing - no difference
Solvex - no transfer
Stain Pro - minimal transfer
Red RX - some transfer
Red RX + steam iron - 20% removal

20% is of course as good as nothing!

Since I was set up I cleaned a 4 x 3 rug for him and charged him £30

I do find a lot of things on this forum difficult to understand.
You can flush ink for as long as you like and how long will it take for an intelligent person to realise that it is not going to make any difference.
Isopropanol is what the printing industry use to clean out their printing machines, many of them costing millions of pounds. The inks are actually formulated to prevent problems in the expensive presses that printing companies own. Inkjet ink is formulated to similar specifications.
Someone mentions solvents, solvents are very use specific and there are a lot of them, so which one do you use?
An example of use specific solvent would be filling a paint scratch on cellulose paint with an epoxy paint and using a solvent to remove the epoxy that will not effect the finish on the cellulose. There are a lot of examples of this. In the printing industry isopropanol will have no effect on the inks use for digital printing. Like wise the solvent used to remove the digital print ink will not touch most other inks.
I have never tried renovate on inks and why should I, it has been formulated for a totally different purpose.
The beauty about isopropanol is that it will not attack  the latex, used in the manufacture of secondary backed carpet. Also being ionic it is easy to flush.
Why even try rx it is not formulated for ink it is for red dye but not the best for that. Get some training!
A pedantic test would be to get some ink a piece of carpet, ultrapac, and lots of flushing and when you have had enough just get some isopropanol. Or you could just soak it if solvent and delaminate the carpet.

Peter

Your advice is very comprehensive, thank you. And yes, I do need some stain removal training. I am aware of this.

I should make it clear though that the area of carpet in question was to be cut up the next day and replaced with laminate flooring so I was free to 'experiment'. I didn't charge him a penny either.

In any other set of circumstances I would have just admitted I wasn't qualified and walked away.

Isopropanol I get from the chemical corporation, It is available in different amounts but I normally buy 25 ltrs at a time for economy.
you should have kept some of the stained carpet to practice on.
Isopropanol is a very useful product for a lot of applications.

Craftex Alco-Spot and Chemspec TIG are designed for use on inks.
