slate nightmare
« on: November 04, 2013, 11:34:22 pm »
Having used 2 liters of lithofin wax off today there is still sealer left on the tile. As i was stripping i nearly slipped on many occasions and trying to vac up the soft sealer was impossible. For a finish i has to let the solvent evaporate and the remaining {soft} sealer dried back in. Cant imagine what sealer or how much was laid on. spoke to the home owner today who told me a FEW people tried to FIX the floor with the PROPER stuff.
What can i do here...Is it possible i cant remove all the old sealer?

You probably know already that I would say "Use a Diamond brush with water, attached to a variable speed machine such as a Flex polisher.
The small brushes are great on smaller areas, but like my good friend Kevin says, on a large area, you need our larger brush fixed to a rotary machine.

Where is the job?

How many sqm is it?

The job is in southern ireland only about 15 square meters. Dont have the tools you recommend. Like i say the coating is being softened but is too tacky to extract. There is something wrong big time!

Can you let it set again?
If you can get hold of a Variable Speed machine, I will gladly post you out a diamond and/or carbide brush. If they do not remove the seal, send it back for a full refund (less postage of course)

Rob,

I have a 17inch black max rotary. Is the brush you recommend the monster stripping brush? My problem here is whatever is on  the floor is still sticking even when softened. How much is the brush?

Do you think the sealer will harden off again?
If the sealer hardens off again, the brush will remove it for you.
The larger brush would also remove most of it, however, with Slate being a riven surface, the smaller surface area of the smaller brush head will be the one for the job.

The old sealer will come off with Aqua Mix Sealing & Coating Remover coupled with a soft to medium brush.  Apply the sealer and allow to dwell 15-30 minutes then agitate with brush and vacuum up.  If it's really tough use some honing powder as well.  All these are available in Dublin Ireland at SMC Group

Ok I managed to sort it....funnily enough by hand...no rotary, no wet vac, no honing powder. Brushed on the stripper which is bostik tile renew a replacement for lithofin wax off i am told. While it was mid way through evaporation i agitated the tiles with a white nylon pad by hand. The soft sealer transmitted straight on to the dry pad leaving a beautiful slate surface...There is no way any wet vac could have extracted this stuff off. I think it could have been polyurethane but not sure. Big lesson leanrned with this one...thanks to all for advice.

Sounds interesting, thanks for sharing, always nice to hear of removers that actually work. Where did you get the Bostik from, was it a tile retailer?
