Slate floor problem
« on: October 29, 2013, 02:52:17 pm »
Cleaned a really dirty slate floor.  Looks great and going to seal but have noticed a few tiles when standing on them water is seeping up from the grout line.

So going to wait to seal.

Is this a worry.  The slate is reclaimed from a roof and been down 20 years.  The fitting isn't great.  There's also holes in a few tiles where they where nailed to the roof.  Didn't notice the holes until after cleaning as they where so dirty.  I figure water has gone down the holes under the tile.

Which would be best a topical seal or impregnator in this situation.

Thanks

Mark

A strange one this!  It sounds from your description that one of two things have happened.

1.  The slate has either been fixed with the wrong adhesive, in other words it should have been fixed with either a C1  or C2 adhesive which is cement based and relies on a chemical reaction to cure.  If however it was fixed with D1 or a D2 which is a water dispersion adhesive then the cleaning process may have leeched water through the holes you describe and started to break down the integrity of the adhesive

2.  Or the substrate of the floor is to blame and is moving I cannot think of another reason.

You can seal the holes with Klindex Knife Grade Stukko colured to match.  I would then seal with Aqua Mix Enrich N Seal which is a premium enhancing impregnating sealer
