I did this last year,

there are different wight categories of manhole covers, some are designed for lightweight use, others are more heavy duty which are designed for driveways and can withstand vehicles driving across them.

I would guess the incorrect cover was fitted, so the homeowner is liable

Happened to me last week, I was worried about van, 1st thing customer said was am I insured >:(
Trouble is a lot of them are years old and made of cast iron making them brittle and very hard to find a replacement unless you replace the frame as well which means building works!
I got a builder mate of mine to sort it, he found one at the 3rd scrappy he went to and fitted it for me, paid for by me as a gesture of good will :-\

Did have a word with a skip hire business who it happens to all the time, they have a waiver in their paperwork...but they say if it went to court you would win as the customer has invited you to their property and it must be fit for purpose ::)roll
Keep an eye on your tyre pressures as it may of fractured your wheel rim

We moved into our present house 2 yr ago, I was digging a border over in garden
with a fork and put it through the gas pipe.
Phoned B Gas and they came to fix it, however they said I would have to pay for it as it was my fault and my land, the pipe was 4" down only with no yellow plastic warning sheet over it.
I said I wouldnt pay and he said well he couldnt fix it then, I said fine, its before my meter anyway, so I wouldnt have to pay for their lost gas.

After further arguing I said I would pay only if they supplied me with the risk assesment and method statement for when it had been fitted, he spoke to his manager on mobile and then said they would fix it free of charge  ;)

numptys the lot of these energy companies

i was digging some footings using a mini digger in my old house and snapped the electric cable, they said i would have to pay £600 to get it repaired, i told them the cable  was not buried deep enough by law and therefore was there fault and they could be sued, they fixed it for free.  ;D

Seems this is a common occurrence.

Happened to me only the back wheel did go down into the manhole ( cast iron ). Phoned the AA and said they would be about 1 hr.

I managed to get it out with a hydraulic jack and heavy timbers to support wheel before they arrived.

Customer said they should have told me as they had noticed a crack in it and accepted full responsibility and damage to the van.
