Craig,

Not an Electrition but I had this problem.

I was told they are self earthing when I phoned supplier.

However check with  your Supplier.

The problem will arise when you want install one that has an earth wire.

If you cant remember what you did.

Sorry craig, i hadnt read your post properly. The earth wire has to be taken off your old vac and put on your new vac.Ive just changed a moter in my machine the new vac having two black wires i was told at prochem that they would join either of the other two wires .I did this and it was fine.

no, old vac had 3 wires green/yellow, black & a white,

new ones got 2 (black),  i think what you say ian makes sense i thought it might be self earthing because one wire comes out and back into the vac motor,

i guess i just dont connect to earth then, i have a feeling the 2 on the new one can go to either, think i might try that and stand back! ;D lol ;D

Never heard of self earthing, but a double double insulated would only have two wire coming from it does'nt matter which way round they go either live or neutral as AC is Alternating current

Vac may be double insulated but try and get a earth on  to it somewhere ( that is presuming the vac  has a metal body) as if you suck up water it may just try and earth through you and your wand, Then you get hair like mine!

If the motor has any exposed metal parts( and I have never come across one that didn't) then it must be earthed. The earth wire off the old motor will have been fixed with a screw somewhere. As long as tgere is a proper connection for the eatrh it seems that it does not matter where. A secure fixing on a motor mount would probably be sufficient if the fan bits are metal.
If both other wires are black then it makes no difference which way they are connected, the motor will still run the right way.
Your machine should be PAT tested after fitting new bits to ensure safety.

Just had a look at the spare Woodbridge There are exposed Metal Parts.

So will do as Trevor says.

If i make it to Carpex I will have a word with Woodbridge.

When I said self earthing its my simple term as I thought that was the definition I had when I quiried no place for earth wire with Woodbridge.

But obviously Vernon who sells motors and calls them Double Insulated has the correct term.

Craig it will be fine up untill it (may possibly) develope a fault and the current look for a easy path to earth

Hence the earth wire to give it a easy path and not a hard one like the poor sap on the end of the wand.

the opposite, those are the light duty motors, that's why its quieter, 1000w as opposed to the 1300w H/D ( I think)
