Travelers don't have to be Irish and they don't have to live in caravans,  I know this because there are loads of them living on a local council estate near me.
Identification is usually straight forward...
New transit in the drive way with amber light on the roof, females wearing too much makeup, men wearing vests, big iron gates on the drive, mini digger or trailer in the garden, religious items, dealer Boots, kids in vests usually fighting....oh and dogs... Usually lots

People like this do this sort of thing all the time the police will avoid any involvement

They had quite a persuasive way of dealing with them in Snatch.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

Its simple,

He got a invoice for the work - Yep
Is it unpaid? - Yep

That is fine,  Debt management company can chase up on this as a Outstanding Balance.

So how does it work you ask?
If they Payee (Person money due to) has not been made then a Debt management company can request the Payer (Person who needs to pay) to pay the outstanding balance.   It is then the Payer to prove they have paid the Payee.  Which is simple as he would have a paper trail or etc as you should be issuing a receipt of some sort to a payer as you could be audited by HMRC without any notice.

Cannot see that working as paper trails have to be signed,ie purchase orders and delivery notes , also   the payer only has to say he paid cash and did not get a receipt, or even sorry never seen the guy before .........
This is the season for fine wine, and drunken friends, enjoy this moment, for this moment is your life.

It just depends on how hard you want to be!   Which is WHY its important you have correct processes in place before you start work.

I have a Quotation I give then if they accept it I then do an acceptance of quote and I get them to sign and date it and then when I arrive I get them to sign a bit paper which is a insurance document & then once I done and before I talk about money I ask 'Could you sign this to say you are happy with the work'  Once that sign I then ask for money and issue a receipt.

I had issue in the past with travellers and this is how I got paid! was due to all the wee bit extra paperwork I did.

Just to add a little balance, did a job this afternoon for a family of 'Showmen' and they were really pleasant and no problems with payment.

Cheers

We have a gypsy camp on the outskirts of our town, they mix in quite well with the community, occasionally there is a bit of trouble, but there is in all walks of life.

All the kids go to a catholic junior school, but dont know any that go to a secondary school.

Every year next town 13 miles away host the Annual horse fair, they stay on a field that has a royal charter saying they can hold it annually, often 80,000 turn up into the small market town, generally the police treat them like sh*te and all hell breaks loose, you wouldnt want to be in the vacinity when it does.

A lot of them have traditional homes as well as living in there caravans on sites, maybe they have double identities  ;)

Of the ones I have dealt with, all have been ok and paid no problem.

Many years ago i was the manager of a night club, they booked it as a young farmers event, cheeky gits, top gypsy from london ended up fighting the top Irish gypsy, never seen a fight like it, lasted 3 half hrs, niether would give in, a copper turned up and said everything seems ok here and that he would leave them to it, wise man.

There parked up in every public car park round here, just 3 or 4 in each one.
There's gear all over the place and the area round them is a sh*thole.
They're despised round here and people complain that when the council does get rid of them they don't charge them for parking.
You or me park w/o paying and you get a fine......old AH was a naughty boy but he had his moments.
Impossible done straight away, miracles can take a little longer.

If anyones wondering why they started living in the UK  .
Perhaps a simple explanation but something like this ...

They used to live on the side of the road in Ireland  , in olden days and perhaps for centuries they traveled from place to place  doing casual or seasonal work , farm labor , selling bits and pieces or they had a craft tin smith etc , the women would call to local houses begging food in return for a blessing or whatever , superstition meant they were well enough treated but perhaps not that trusted and socially isolated .
Jump to recent times  ... last 50 years they started to get vans and caravans ,  still on the side of the road , dealing in scrap , selling bits and pieces , with some opportunist theft and shoplifting .  No door to door as the settled irish would barely talk to them let alone buy or give them anything .   Very socially isolated from the settled  irish  , laws at the time meant if they entered a shop  for eg the shopkeeper could leap out and run them out the door just on entering and likewise they would be refused entry to pubs , hotels . local  Councils started to move them on from roadside camps and blocked lay-bys with boulders , as the country developed the roads became busy and dangerous for the children to live there also  , government solution was purpose built halting sites , with some facilities .  They were also offered housing and generally money was thrown at them and still is to avert a bigger problem if poverty prevails .
So I'd say many moved to England where they could still pull into waste ground while the council scratched their head as to what to do  , and they could now hustle work or sell door to door  , painting barns , tarmac , selling generators or whatever as the English would kinda trust them thinking they are just ' Da Irish ' an some of them are a bit rough  ...
So here we are ... big fat Gypsie weddings ,   big brother paddy , etc  , they still travel , but mostly just home to see the relatives in Ireland ,  flaunt the cars and wealth if they have it ... and perhaps have a fight or two with the cousins      :)

I clean windows in Ireland, and a fair few of my customers are members of the travelling community.

In my experience, most of those I deal with are polite and treat me fairly, so I am happy because they are happy. There are others, some of whom are direct family members of the 'good' customers, who pull every excuse to avoid paying. I don't retaliate, but I keep a record of the problem customers and will only clean for them again once the money is in my hand.

I had a phone call only today from a lady who owes me for 4 cleans. Yes I have only myself to blame for being too soft, but I am finally learning!. She was pleading with me to clean her windows tomorrow. I told her I will, but only after she has paid me all that she owes. She agreed, although it sounded reluctant on the phone. When I turn up, unless she pays upfront, I will drive away. If she pays, happy days. We will see.

I live next to a camping area for holiday makers in Germany. We've had pykies rock up here twice for short stays. They drive 5 to 10 year old 4X4's and drag brand new top of the range LMC luxury caravans about. All with the upholstery still covered in plastic protective sheaths.

They pay cash in advance to the farmer, and avoid talking to me when they see the British flag flying on a mast in my front garden.  ;D When I did try to talk to them once, they went into a huddle and practiced darting eye movements.  :D No kids by the way, and no females or dogs. I assume they were on a caravan "buying" trip.  ::)roll

I wouldn't have left the dirty water on their carpet Mark. They can get nasty and you may get a visit one night from him and his ginger mates.
No still don't understand, I must be thick
