They probably wont come round as if they are proper gypsies then they will not want the community knowing they owed money as they are very proud people  .But my guess is they were not and wont give a sh*te and bank on people not standing up to them so as not to pay .

Here in Ireland we can tell the difference in accent pretty easy over the phone  , some here would just not work for them or ask for payment up front , prejudice against them is more acute here  ,  but there are some good travelers  who are just trying to make the best of the hand they have been dealt .
They a bit of a social problem and hopefully they will integrate in a few generations as education improves for them  .

But Irish people generally don't talk like this  ...   ;D

We have these type in our area,  Well did until Police removed them.

Our major problem is we have a company name on our van and Part of Group is Debt Management/sheriff officers and there was certain parts of Ayr which we not visit as we get our vans smashed, tyres sliced, kit nicked, staff of bricks thrown at.

Did a job for an Irish couple today, alarm bells did ring once I got there, but try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.
Lounge / stairs and round bed in a bed room.
Started job, they went out shopping,I finish and call saying I am done,he replies I got a puncture, can you go home and I will drop off the money later,I was in Yaxley which is a good 25 min drive, said no I will wait till you get back.
10 mins later he calls again saying he is going to be a few hours waiting for recovery,I said ok then,I will take goods to the value of £75,which I can give you back once I have the money..2 mins later he turns up with 2 mates.
Long story short,it got a bit heated, not smoked for 5 days so I was a little irate .
Ended up chucking the bucket of filthy water I had put aside all over his hall way and driving off,he called me a few times on the way home saying he wanted me to come and sort it out..
First time in 9 years I have written off a payment, but was better to walk rather than start a war with pikies as there are loads of them in Yaxley...So guys don't work at 8 owl end walk in Yaxley
You won't get paid..
Sorry to hear about this, and people wonder why they get a bad name.
David

What's the law on returning "dirt"

Sure you are just putting it back but what about the water?
That water was never in the carpet before you arrived, you cant just go and flood someones house. It's vandalism.

Warren is right though. its not the replacement of dirt that will damage the carpet, its the 10 litres of water dumped n the carpet.

As much as i think its right to do that to the non paying scum the law will probably take their side unfortunately.

I did threaten to take goods to the value of the clean, which he could have taken back upon payment, but about 10 mins after I told him that he turned up with his mates, funny how he said the recovery company were going to be 3 hours and also funny how at first he said they were out shopping, then he changed his story to he was at hospital with his pregnant wife, who he told me he left there, but came walking back into the house shortly afterwards.
Lying scum,he started preaching to me about how travellers, don't deserve their bad name and they aren't all the same !!
Think he proved they do

And re the law,I really can't see them getting in touch with the police

What funny is you could actually still pass this onto a Debt Management firm to collect the amount owed plus they would have experience and would properly get the money owed to you.

How could a debt management company "recover " this debt , there is no "purchase order" and the customer would simply say "I paid him cash" ............???

Its simple,

He got a invoice for the work - Yep
Is it unpaid? - Yep

That is fine,  Debt management company can chase up on this as a Outstanding Balance.

So how does it work you ask?
If they Payee (Person money due to) has not been made then a Debt management company can request the Payer (Person who needs to pay) to pay the outstanding balance.   It is then the Payer to prove they have paid the Payee.  Which is simple as he would have a paper trail or etc as you should be issuing a receipt of some sort to a payer as you could be audited by HMRC without any notice.
