Pump Location
« on: October 08, 2013, 03:57:07 pm »
I have a 400 ltr flat tank ... wheres best to locate the pump ?

also I have an elbow tap in the BSP  of my tank .. now can I angle this to point up?? and then run into the pump or is along the floor best to start from the BSP.... but at some point the hose will need to rise into the pump tho..

just trying to establish what is best for the ease of the pump , water flo..... if that make sense

cheers

Pump as low down as possible - eliminates priming problems (some pumps will self-prime, some won't) and also helps stop airlocks when the tank level is low.

Thanks Ian

At present I have it at the same height as my tank more or less ( it's a flat tank) so not really that high ...

Now regarding the outlet tap can I have this angled straight up from the BSP port ?

You could, but that would defeat the object of having the pump low down.  The pipe from the tap would presumably rise vertically before it turned to meet the inlet of the pump.  That loop would be a constant air-lock problem as water would drain back whenever the tank level was near the outlet.

the most ideal place for the pump would be below the tank you would get no issues with air locks then

How would you put pump below the tank when the tank sits on the floor of the van !!!! Mmmmm unless you cut hole in van floor and have it hanging near the road maybe pmsl 😁

in my old vauxhall combo van i put the pump behind the passenger seat which was below the tank, as the load area wasnt the lowest place in the van

Unless it was on the floor the hose would have to loop up to the pump at some point ... Or am I completely thick and can't get it pictured in my head

Mine's above the tank (just) but I have a none-return valve fitted just before the pump inlet. ;)

I've found flat tanks to be notorious for air locks just too much slosh

One advantage of the IBC tank is it's mounted on a metal pallet so the pump is always below it.

Even with the tank on the van floor you can mount the pump with the inlet/outlets virtually touching the floor ( head of the pump lowest ) keeping any rise in the pipe to a minimum

Approx £5, you'll get one from a caravan shop. It stops the water level falling back down the hose from the tank, keeps the system primed & works well providing all your connections good too.

This is mine, it fits inside 1/2" hose.

Ordered up

Is this the best place to have it fitted ? .. I take it (well they look like they do) fit inside the hose ??

Could it be fitted more or less immediately after the outlet tap on the tank ? As in theory the idea is to stop it returning back down the hose to the tank .. ??

I cut my hose in two & inserted the device equally into each piece then put a cable tie either side to secure- it's a nice tight fit.

It needs to be fitted as high up in the hose as possible, not low down near the tank outlet. Mine is just before an elbow turns the hose onto the pump inlet

If it's high up will this not still create an air problem from the tank outlet to the valve as water swills back into the tank .. Or do I have it wrong in my head

Will It not cause the same problem of air from the valve back down to the tank outlet then if it's high up ..

It may well work at the bottom, I'm no expert, my thinking was the risk of any air getting past it when the tank is low & the water is splashing about in the tank.

In Fact, thinking about it, it might even work better at the bottom!!! ;D
