Advice on which RO system please!
« on: October 05, 2013, 07:53:09 pm »
Hi, can someone recommend which ro system to get me started? i currently use about 400litres per day, just using a di vessel. I plan to have the unit set up in my garage, and run a hose to my van fill up after work each day.

Also can someone please explain the gpd? It states this means gallons per day, but why is it restricted to how many gallons per day of pure water it can produce?

how long would it take a 300gpd system pumped or unpumped to fill a 400litre tank with pure water? My water pressure is i would say average to good, but i dont know in terms of psi.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

thanks  :)

GPD is what that size of filter/a membrane can handle with optimum conditions also bear in mind that this figure is usually in US gallons which are smaller than an imperial gallon.

I'd go for a Merlin with a decent booster pump as this will produce you around 100 litres per hour or go for something that will be future proof like a 4040 unit

100 litres per hour!  :o wow that is slow...so do people tend to have RO set up in there van then so the water is pumped through an RO unit before going through a DI vessel?
That way I suppose the low flow rate wouldn't be an issue as you wouldn't need it any higher. Is that right?  ???

Yes you go through the RO then di vessel you make your water over night or after work if on the van or have a static system in a garage etc.. And make water during the day

Hi Mike.

Speak to doug at dauqa.

Just got myself 450 gpd ro £180

Makes  nearly 40 ltrs an hour not pumped.

I know you need bigger and better than this!

But i think he's worth talking too.

Thanks for your advice smudgef the other day.

Decided on not getting a merlin and sticking to what i know
 ;D
If i used booster pump would get 60-70 litres an hour.
I use 200 a day average.

Here you go mike.

Doug makes systems up.

He is in Scotland but usually get stuff next day if ordered in morning

And his prices are inclusive of vat.

Good luck.

We used a 450GPD r/o for 7 years and started to process water into a 1000 litre IBC tank when my son joined the business. When there were 2 of us working, it kept up with our needs. I filled up at night and my son filled his van up in the morning. (We replaced it last year with a 4040 as the r/o was too small for a third person cleaning 2 days a week.)

To get ahead in winter when water production is much slower, I usually filled my van up on Saturday and the other on Sunday.

We also managed the filling of the IBC tank using a solenoid valve and a float switch in the IBC tank. The float switch activated the flow from the mains through the r/o when water was taken and switched it of when the tank was full. It hasn't required any intervention in the past 6 years.

We have always had an unpumped system with a water pressure of between 40 and 50psi. Our tap tds is between 100 and 125 and the pure is coming out at between 1 and 2. This was the same with the 450GPD unit.

Before they replaced all the mains piping about 4 years ago, our taps tds was 255 and the same r/o was reducing that to 4.

GPD is in American gallons which are smaller than Imperial gallons. A day is 24 hours long. In my experience, the actual production of an r/o membrane is around half of the best manufacturers rate, especially in winter when the water is much colder.

The reason for using an r/o system id for the pure water it produces. So this is why the pure product is the important spec. If you use more water per day that the r/o produces then you will run out of water before the day is finished.

I do know of several cleaners who don't use much water per day and use very small r/o's, but they run them pretty much 24/7 which I wouldn't do.

Not that big but a bit top heavy ;D

GOOD ADVICE SPRUCR!!

i have 625 ltr tank in parents garage and 16 barrels.

My barrels last 2 days usually and my dad keeps tank topped up;

So by sunday i have a weeks water with barrels.

Winter can cause problems frozen pipes to garage

the trouble with an r/o in the van Susan is that you can't let the van freeze, ever, as the membranes will be damaged.

One of the local lads bought a van with an Omnipole system fitted. The unit came with 2 x 4040 housings and membranes and they were fitted inside the tank and 'floated' about in the water, only restrained by their inlet and outlet hoses. I presume that this was to keep them from freezing up.

This is why I think that it is better to mount them in a static environment with enough applied warmth to prevent them from freezing.

When we first started with wfp, I processed water directly into my trailer overnight. The r/o was next to the back outside tap, even when it was freezing outside. As long as it is processing water it wouldn't freeze. I unplugged it every day in the winter and brought it inside, usually storing it in the bath.

My ro that i had for 8 years froze up twice. pre filter housings shattered.

Membranes were never damaged must have been very lucky.
