New bettery showing 11.4 - 11.8 when running ?
« on: October 01, 2013, 08:01:04 am »
Got a new 100a battery shows like 12.2-12.4 when the pump has filled the system
When the pump is running and filling the system its really low to the point it will almost cut out around 11.4 then when i connect the pole to the hose it works around 11.7 - 11.8 has it got anything to do with micro bore or pump being 2 years old I do these days have to use it at almost max around 90

the battery might not be brand new.it could of been sitting on a shelf for 2 years before being sold to you which could effect it.

my leisure battery is knackered after 9 months.i just use a cheaper car battery now.

ive been toying with the idea of a split charge relay but ive no idea how to fit them and whether itll be more hassle than a separate battery.
price higher/work harder!

never fitted one myself but auto electrician wont charge fortune to do job - ive never charged a battery in over 3 years - fit it and forget about it :)

Split charge is dead easy.

One wire from main battery to the unit. Then two wires to the leisure battery. Easy peasey.

I now run a 12v leisure battery with in line backup battery.

Hard wired battery charger with maintaince mode to not damage battery.

Hard wired external socket to plug into garage.

Dual 12v LCD power gauges to monitor van battery and leisure batteries

And last but not least a solar panel.

Because the work I do is compact I usually drive to work and only move the van once or twice a day. So by day 3 and 4 I have issues. Was really doing my head in.

So it may be over kill but bugger me I ain't had a flat battery lmao.

Yes daz fitting a split relay is pretty simple for someone who knows a thing or 2 about ele, my battery is from
A top supplier its a UMAX something is wrong and I don't know what it's stop starting now running at around 11.2 really low even with engine running ...
Pls help  :(

Got a new 100a battery shows like 12.2-12.4 when the pump has filled the system
When the pump is running and filling the system its really low to the point it will almost cut out around 11.4 then when i connect the pole to the hose it works around 11.7 - 11.8 has it got anything to do with micro bore or pump being 2 years old I do these days have to use it at almost max around 90

A battery following a full charge will register between around 12 - 13 volts.  As you place a load on the battery in this case switch your pump on the voltage will fall off in your case between 11.4 and 11.8 and will likely hold at that point for a few hours.

What you are seeing is the normal operation of a circuit the volts are carrying the current (amps) to the pump the volts return back to the battery with the amps being used by the pump. Think of the Volts being a carrier belt.
At the start of the day you have a 100 amps during the day the amps fall and by the end of the day will be lower.

How many amps you use will depend on the pump motor efficiency, water flow rates and how much pressure is required in your system to get the flow you want.
Running the pump at 90 you are probably using around 6 - 7 amps an hour I would guess you are getting around 6 hours or so if work out of your battery a day. 6 x 6 + 36 amps used a day. Your battery now has around 64 amps left.

What will happen is that while the amps in the battery are high the volts in the battery stay constant. After 3 - 4 hours use as the amps drop you will see a sudden fall of in volts as well. this is normal and as long as you recharge the battery at the end of the day replacing both Volts and Amps no problem.

Fitting a split relay can help, however how much the amps are replaced will depend on how much driving you do the battery will still need a bench charge every couple days or so.

Volt drop could also be an issue try to ensure that cables are as short as possible and replace any worn/rusted connectors or damaged cable. http://www.springltd.co/node/133

To answer the other points yes your pump will not be as efficient as it was possibly the motor brushes are worn or just full of dust. a 6mm hose will create higher restriction in the system also meaning the pump has to work harder to get the water to the brush head. Very good article explaining this in July WCM.

Out of interest what is the calibration level on the control

With the pump off what is the voltage showing? Next check your cables and connections to the batter and pump. Replace any thing that is damaged or worn.

What brand pump do you have?

Just thinking through are you using the vehicle battery to run your WFP system? or is the Numax a 12V leisure battery?
Volt drop does seem to be an issue here as I would not expect the battery to drop a volt when the pump is started.

I can give you a quick call what is your number?

Had  a thought is there any chance your pimp pre filter is blocked or is there any grit/dirt in the brush jets. Any thing that restricts the water flow will cause the pump to work harder, the harder the pump works the greater the current draw and volt load on the battery.

Thanks for the Info

I have emailed you with some suggestions I am 99% certain its a connection issue, with either a loose or worn connector. It would be useful to get a volt meter and check the Leisure and vehicle batteries plus that the relay is working.
I would expect to see volts come up to nearer 13V with the engine running, Although this could also be a faulty connection issue.
