gazz i use a 10inch vikan, its just that i liked the idea that you have put across about the salmon brushes, The swivel is a great brush by the look of the pics. I dont want to buy anything thats heavier than what am using.if it is a lot lighter i would like to buy a swivel.thanks jouk45

My system came with a 15" x 2" salmon - ok but too wide for most of my work
I bought a 10" Vikan - good and light, but pencil jetted as against fan-jet. (A bit small for most of my work.)
Now I've got an auto-brush and went for a 12" x 3" Salmon - perfick!
It's a game of three halves!

A Vikan brush weighs 14ozs.
..........but we have found the new formula vikan brush is pretty unbeatable for scrubbing the window with minimum of effort, but if weight is really an issue then the salmon is a bit lighter.

You can't just take into account the weight of the brush and think its only 4oz heavier, its not worth changeing.

Fact you do not need to pull a salmon brush off the window to rinse as you have to with the vikan. That puts a lot less strain on your arms. The higher you go the easier it gets.

The salmon is a rectanguler shape so is more suited to rectanguler windows, the 10" Vikan is oval so it does not glide into the corners of the glass the same.

I find the density and shape of the bristles of the salmon brush far more suitable to clean frames above the glass. Its far better at removing spider egg sacks on first cleans then the vikan.

The difference in weight between the brushes is accentuated when working at hight, the greater the angle you work at the heavier the vikan brush gets, the higher you go the heavier the vikan gets. If you have a long gooseneck so the brushs weight is further away from the pole or gravitys center then the heavier it feels.

I have had a lot of problems with RSI since i went WFP at the start of the year, loseing manys nights of sleep beacause of swelling in my hands and mind numbing pain around the tricep muscles and elbow joints. I switched to the salmon brush 9 days ago and I have had 9 good nights sleep, the tingling in my hands from RSI injury has nearly gone.

For me The Salmon brush v Vikan brush is a no brainer. The same could be said between 1/2" v M/bore hose.

Nel.

Thanks for all your comments, yours particularly Neil.

The issue of brushes and which is best is quite important to us and we are looking into offering a choice as standard with our poles. The weight aspect is something that we are seriously looking into at the moment, we have an ultra lightweight pole in prototype form and would like to partner this with  the lightest brush we can get hold of.

At 12ft the weight doesn't really matter but at 45ft it makes a massive difference, as neil said, this is important.

We have also heard negative comments about the longevity of the Salmon brushes so we will be interested in anyones comments on this aspect. Any comments please email me on  alex@gardiner.e7even.com

With RSI 4ft 12ft or 50ft, weight at an angle is a big issue.
At height even the weight of an ultra light fishing pole with a very light brush of say only 6-7oz becomes a strain with the accentuated leverage causing slight pulling movements of the ligaments, whatever the length of pole. Especially when using over conservatories or lifting from the horizontal. However after 2 months of using the fishing poles I have to say they are a joy to use and a really pleasant experience which can only be experienced when you actually get one in your hands.
