Thanks Colin, can you explain this a bit more cheers, I've never used a 40" and only been told a little about back washing etc

If you are on a meter you get charged for the amount of water used and a sewerage charge, if you fit a sub meter and tell the water company what you are doing you will only get charged for the water not the sewerage charge, when I get my bill I take a reading of my sub meter, phone up anglian water and tell them this reading, they then re issue an amended bill usually over a £100 less.

Thanks Luke let me explain.. i recieve the discount from the water board but i want to buy a RO that produces low waste. Low waste = less consumption obviously.

Ah I see, well my 4040 is set at 2 litres a minute pure to 2.4 litres waste and thats going in at 450ish ppm and coming out at 12ppm I could adjust it by lowering the waste which would give me more pure but it will up the tds to much and will cost more in resin.

Ok cheers, I didn't know that you can set the flow rate on the 40, do you also have 3 pre filters on these as normal on a smaller ro like I have. Also how do you go about back washing? Cheers

You cannot set the flow rate, rather you tweak the valve on the waste pipe to adjust your waste/pure ratio.
For hard water areas a 70% waste to 30% pure ratio seems to be the recommended norm.
In a softer water area a 50/50 ratio is probably ok.
Back washing or flushing is easy, you just leave the waste valve fully open so all flushed through water washes over the membrane and goes to drain.
Most 4040 RO's have 2 pre-filters (sediment and carbon block) although some systems are now using just one of the new fibredyne pre-filters.

If there was a low waste RO we would all own one.Waste water is what saves RO membrane, any attempt to reduce will kill the live span of your Membrane. So decide which costs more water or membrane. Reducing the waste could also reduce water production gal/min so its catch 22. Any advice would be subjective.

Right, i stand corrected. I didnt know the theory about the membrane and waste, i just thought you could get the lowest possible, saying that i do know that an RO works at optimum with higher pressure so i suppose there was my answer. Also do you have to add salt to do the back wash , and what is the benefit of having the new fibredyne pre filter.

You only need to backflush a water softener with salt which would be before the ro,  you only really need one if your water is very hard like mine. Never put salt through a membrane it wouldn't do it any good.

Last time i checked my water was around 250 - still think i need the softener and whats the fibredyne about?

You need a twin 40 40 set up run in "series" (one after the other) as opposed to in "parallell" (side by side). You'll also need a booster pump. Using this expensive set up, i'd guess nearly a grand new , your ratio of waste to pure should read 25% waste, 75% pure.

As Andy says above you could hope for a waste ratio of 50% with one RO, but also you'd need to flush too, so that would be it all going to waste when you flush. I think thats as good as you can get.

Good flow by the sounds of it.nice price and says it produces 75% less waste water.
