As far as I know the new shape Dispatch/Experts come in either 1.6 hdi or 2.0 hdi engines.
There are loads about with the 1.6 engine, but I believe the 2.0 is supposed to be much better overall.

I have the new shape 1.6 dispatch with a 650 litre tank.
Never have any problem with hills.
Have it almost 5 years now and so far its been very reliable.
Don't think its hard on fuel no different than any van carrying a heavy load.
Speed wise it will overtake when I need to but its no racer whish could be a good thing
considering I have a 650 litre tank of water behind me.
Payload on the 1.6 short wheelbase is 1000kg.

I've got a "new" shape one. It's from 2007, 106k on the clock. 2.0 HDI. With GrippaMax 650, and everything accompanying it I get 29 MPG (probably would do even better if wheel bearings would be replaced all around.)

Drives superbly well, in fact it drives better fully loaded. Plenty of power, plenty of torque, especially going uphill. Pleasant to be in as well. Galvanized chassis, so no rust. AFAIK Ford and Merc vans still don't have that.

Ps. get the 2.0. The 1.6 had some turbo problems, not sure if they have fixed that in the newer ones.

There's a load of tosh talked about on here about vans.  This post is a rare one that makes sense.

People bang on that van X is so slow you can't get it up to twenty with a full load or that it drinks fuel (apparently my Hiace is a well-known nightmare for that) or that Transits rust through the day after you buy them.

Well, the truth isn't anything like that.  A 1.6 is bound to be a bit slower than a 2.0 but it'll be OK - racing around with 1/2 a ton of water inthe back is daft anyway.  My Hiace uses about as much fuel as I'd expect.  I see hundreds of mint-looking transits without a spot of rust.  No-one is producing truly awful vans these days, as they are all competing for a market that looks at what it buys.  Companies don't buy vans because they look nice or have a cool image.  They buy them because they do the job at the right price and right running costs.

So, divide every comment on here (positive or negative) about a particular van by ten and you might be somewhere near the truth.

From what I have heard a lot of people have had problems with the 1.6. I have the old shape 2.0hdi which I would highly recommend. Nearly 8 years from new.

im keeping my eye out for the 2 litre higher payload version but they are much rarer than the 1.6 1k payloads.  its either that or the predictable vivaro/trafic.

Are the newer vivaros good now as I hear lots of stories about pre 05s?

Not at all transits rust like mad, i alway notice the arches and around the doors and a 1.9d scudo is as slow as a snail and strugles up hills when full well at least mne did!.
Best bet is to buy a van that is capable of its job which is to have room and be able to take the weight without struggling and also idealy not be an old rust bucket.
