Insurance for Van and Truckmount
« on: August 21, 2013, 05:48:17 pm »
I notice the forum admin have got sponsorship from A-Plan insurance - on the strength of that I rang them and asked about insuring a van with a truckmount in it - the bloke was helpful but after ringing around all their underwriting companies he came back to me to say none of them would insure a van with a truckmount on/in it. One of the questions he asked me was did we carry a fuel tank for the truckmount - yes I said of course, they dont run very well on thin air - next question was how full did we have the fuel tank - I said that really was a pretty ridiculous question and he agreed but said the underwriters had asked. So all in all a not very constructive conversation and a waste of time ringing A Plan if you have a triuckmount.

dealing with insurance companies sometimes is a nightmare
yesterday I was calling some to insure my van for another year and when I was telling that I am doing car valeting as an add on then all of them said thay can not insure me for this, trying explain that I am only carying the stuff for valeting and I am not driving other cars/customers cars, "no this is motor trade and we do not insure". Ridiculous as this is a van insurance and the purpose I use it for should not make a difference, not on something like that. Finally I am staying with previous company that have no problem with that.

Speak to Graeme at the NFU, 01787 259702, that's where I got my truckmount insured  :)

Richard - thanks for that - yes NFU was a name I have heard mentioned before - the number you mention is Sudbury area so I will probably need to find an NFU office nearer to me - anyway thanks for the lead

Is it classed as a modification since its bolted into the van?

I know guys with window reach & wash type systems get a discount if they use an approved installer of crash tested systems.

I have this week been notified from Co op insurance that from my renewal date they will no longer be doing commercial Insurance. Been with them 10 years and no claims to date. At the time they were one of a few that covered having a TM fitted inside van. Most didn't want to know as they said it was a modification have it bolted down. At least I have 2 months to sort out.

There is a gap in the market here for a specialist insurer/agent/underwriter to come in here and actually LEARN something about the risk (actuarial risks) involved with insuring this type of vehicle/machine combination - it seems to me that the risks are actually fairly low - I have heard of burn-outs in the US but I have only heard of one burn-out in the UK in the last 10 years - that must make a fairly lucrative market for an insurer who is prepared to actually find out THE FACTS...

I've heard of about 4 that have burnt out, only the insurance industry know the true figure. Van thefts especially Fords in some areas are rife.

NFU in Chorley do it.
We had to get a certificate saying our lpg system was up to scratch.
If you insure just your van and you have an internal fuel supply for your TM you could have a problem with your insurer if there is a claim if they didn't know about it.
