Having said how great the metal reels are (value for money) - the ones with the petal shaped sides, I can never understand why sometimes it's tight to wind and unwind. Tonight I took it apart and it's obvious how poor the design is. The spool is made from two halves that just push together. Of course as soon as it's loaded up and put under pressure it simply pushes apart again eventually knackering the plastic spacers. I give up with the crap we get sold sometimes

i have had these broken on me before, the solution is to cover it with lots of grease and that will cure the problem.

And yes they are Rubbish made.

The solution I think is a couple of 8mm diameter threaded bars to join the two halves together properly. If only I had the time.

The solution is to spent some money and buy a proper reel, tight arse

Get a Hannay. £350odd but mine is nearly a decade old! Only had to replace the brake twice. Which was £15.

My Hannay is 7 1/2 years old and not had to replace anything on it. Where do you buy them from now?

The company who supplied mine went out of business.

Mine came as part of the package with my professionally installed van mount (company no longer trading) and is a van mounted reel. It looks very similar to the Cox Reel that Gardiner's sell but is not powder coated steel so will not rust when hose wears the powder coating. I think it is made from aluminum. Anyway it is very good.

One of my super swivels went on one of mine, both reels 5 years old but one gets more use than the other! Anyway, I also used bridge, very helpful and next day delivery! They also supply hannay reels!

Repaired it last night - fed a couple of 6mm rods through and bolted together. Won't come apart now, the only trouble is I now have the fastest spinning reel in the west.

Queue tangles a plenty then young Buff.
A week or so of effing & jeffing every time you wind up.
And eventually...eventually, your little arms will have to reach down, deeeeep down into your pocket-fish around for a bit unearth your wallet. Then once you e brushed the cobwebs off, the moths have all flown to the one single flickering candle in the corner and you've prised it open...
Get down to Bridge Engineering part with about 3 hours work worth of cold hard cash and get a proper reel.
Hannay-all the way.

Might have a look on Gardiners - think they order in Cox reels now and again. Hannays are just too expensive for me,
I'm only a window cleaner after all - not a business man.

I've got one of those run of the mill metal hose reels with the petal shaped sides.
I think my one is over 3 year old.
One good thing I like about them is that you can buy most of the spare parts for them fairly easily from suppliers.
I recently over hauled it a couple of months ago, to be honest most of the parts I replaced on it were still ok, as it was only really the centre spindle that needed replacing due to being slightly rounded off on the handle end due to wear and tear.
But I took the opportunity to replace and renew the water connection fittings including the brass flexible elbow, and bought a spare handle just incase the old original one ever broke.
I think they are brilliant value for money considering how much use my one has.

I thought the same too, mine is probably six months old and it's squashed the spacer completely out of shape. Don't know why they don't make a one piece spool - don't suppose it would fit in the box then. Although relatively cheap they are still a lot of money for basically tat.

The Hannay is cheaper than the one on Gardiners bud... £282+VAT (delivered) at Bridge Engineering.
Can't speak for the quality of either of your links though bud-I've not used them.

As for replacing parts-the Hannay just doesn't need parts! (Other than a brake for me, £15-lasts 5ish years...)

This is exactly what I have done with mine. I found when I started using hot water the hoses would swell and cause the hose reel to put more pressure on the plastic bush and make it hard to wind in. The metal rods hold everything in place nicely.

Just got back in from a gutter clean - the reel is spinning so fast it's throwing coils of thermobore everywhere 

Going to have to make a brake now .
